I wonder... Back in Vermont my brother has another gun from the old days: a Springfield 45-70 breech-loader. I wonder if we got the rods mixed!?

FWIW here's a shot of the ramrod. For all I know, back in 1947, the owner was on his way out the door to trade the musket at my dad's store, realized it didn't have a ramrod, and pulled one out of a nearby gun!

Thanks Flinter. As pointed out somewhere in this tome, my dad took this gun in trade at his sporting goods store in 1947 and has sat with us ever since. I doubt the ramrod would be a repro as... was anyone actually making such a thing back then?

Thanks Flinternick. The frizzen looks to be from another gun, but what's your take on the ram rod? Also off another weapon? Also, on mine, the bayonet lug is on the top. Is that a later modification or expected?

Member Hopping also added this -- which to me speaks to why we care about these old devices so much in the first place: (and Thanks again) "Wouldn't it be great if you knew the history of that musket and who carried it. It was made in the little town of Charleville, France right after the...

OK, for those who haven't fallen asleep over this thread, here's what I found out in my conversation with member "Hopping" who is an expert on Charleville muskets and who has been a Federally Licensed Gunsmith for 56 years and does restoration, conservation and preservation of antique firearms...

I'm a little nervous about remove the screws. Will they come off easily? We've only had it since 1947, but judging from your description it hasn't been off since the revolution! Is this safe to do? Thanks again hopping

Thanks hopping. By a shot inside the lock, do you mean removing the lock as in your pic above? Or just a shot of the lock with the frizzen forward? Yes, there is a very faint mark above "Charleville." Here's a pic.

Thanks again, hopping. But, then, the last question, is there anything about my gun that suggests it's not a legit Charleville. It came into our family in 1947. Thanks

Thanks hopping. So, I assume you mean 1763/1768, not 1863 etc. Although it's extremely hard to see on the lock, I have a D and some sort of "design". By the "previous post" with respect to the frizzen, which image are you talking about? The only part of my gun -- the subject of this thread...

Thanks again, QW. For my part I can read French, but my ability to speak only returns when I am in France! Was heading over to Lille for the TV "festival" there, but we got stopped by the plague.

Thanks for your response QW, much appreciated. I think the simplest thing is to have the musket appraised by at least two professionals. Which I am in the process of doing. The N-Ray was just for humor.

BTW the N-Ray thing was supposed to be humorous. Just in case. (I lived in Paris for two years and loved it!)
