Converting old Thompson barrels to smoothbore? Shotgun sizes?

There is no hard rule because there is a large variation in the depth of the rear sight holes as drilled and taped by T/C from barrel to barrel and year to year resulting in many barrels with thin material between the threaded rear sight and the bores. Also depth of rifling and concentricity of...

    New Flintlock User

I have found that keeping the frizzen clean also helps sparking. I wipe the frizzen with 91% IPA and have lightly sanded the frizzen face with 400 grit paper especially if the face gets dinged if it is not well hardened. An irregular surface doesn’t help flint life. You could also try some German...

    New “old” barrel...

Just found my old .62 cal smoothbore barrel lost in the garage a long while ago. Time to try some pure lead round ball and see if 3f or 2f will be best a about 50 yds. RG

    Howdy Fellars and Ladies! Duck

Welcome back, I’m just coming back to this forum after a long absence my self. Make some smoke with the real powder. Nothing quite like it.

    Thompson center Hawkens replacement barrel

New barrels occasionally are found on auction sites at various prices. Another option is to have your barrels rebored to a larger caliber at your desired twist.

    Frizzen to hard

If the frizzen is too hard, annealing in an oven at 400-450 F for about 20 minutes and then turn offheat and allow to slow cool to room temperature will anneal the frizzen. Make sure the frizzen is clean ( degreased and dried before using your oven) Don't ask me why. RG

    over powder card wads

I use dry lubed patches cut at the muzzle because that is how I get the best accuracy. IMHO, in consistant wet patches contribute to fliers. I could not control slightly wet, wet and wetter so I use Dutch's patch lube recommendations. YMMV. A card wad probably can't hurt.

54 caliber renegade - hard to load

Did you drop a bore light down and look for build up in the tight area?

    Question concerning 54 Cal.

Welcome to the forum. I have both 50 and 54 cal rifles and preferred 54 for heavy brush when I hunted. I don't believe 54 cal rifles will disappear in our lifetime. There are fewer available since Thompson Center stopped production of traditional muzzleloaders, however as has been mentioned...

    .50 cal smoothbore loads

FWIW, my TC 56 SB likes #5 shot (7/8 oz) and 65 gr of 3f. At 25/30 yds tree rats don't like the load at all. Ed

just got back into smoothbore game

I have a better pattern using an overshot card instead of a fiber wad. I think that the fiber wad blows a hole in the pattern, at least with my SB. Sometimes I use two overshot cards overpowder. Pattern board was at 30 yds.YMMV

    Recommend a reliable flintlock rifle

Hello, new to the forum and looking for a moderate price flint lock to get back into blackpowder paper shooting. I have two T/C percussion rifles and want to get into paper and target shooting with a flint rifle. I am prepared to spend 500 - 800 $. What do you recommend both new and used...
