    Parts shortage?

If I had to make all my own parts when I first started building at 21 the barrier to entry would have been insurmountable, younger builders won't be able to get into building and the hobby will die out for all but those with a well equipped workshop and the knowledge to use the tools to make...

    Parts shortage?

Well thanks, I think that sideplate is my favorite part of the whole thing. I always get a kick out of starting from a stock blank and figuring out the best way to get whatever parts I've picked out or made to fit together in it, pretty much guarantees each gun I make is totally unique with...

    Parts shortage?

That's about what I expected, can only hope things will clear up. Shame to see things in such a state, would hate to see this become the new norm for traditional gun building.

    Parts shortage?

Been out of the gun building hobby for a few years due to a lack of a workshop and the green stuff that runs it, but I recently finished a 16ga Fowler from some parts I had stashed away now that I have a place to work on my projects again. Getting married next year and a good family friend is...

    japanese matchlock

The biggest challenge with these guns is the breech plug, the Japanese made these with an extra long plug. You can always use a more typical short plug but you'll have to adjust the pan, lock plate and serpentine to fit. Here's a number of pictures of a disassembled gun for reference...

    Airline Case For Flintlocks

I recently picked up a large hardcase from Cabela's and once padlocked shut it just does not come open even with the latches undone, very important when flying, you don't want anything to stick out accidentally if it's unlatched. Here's the one I got. They're expensive, but it's best not to...

    Snapping matchlock internals

I don't believe so, I haven't found any mention of rifling until they started importing foreign Percussion rifles in the late 1800s, though the Tanegashima was still being made and used during this time as well. Tradition dies hard in Japan. I plan on building one myself, by preference I've...

    Snapping matchlock internals

Yes, the tail of the serpentine is locked with the end of the sear, which protrudes through the lock plate. It need not be very long, just enough to prevent the serpentine from moving past the sear. You can see this in the bottom left corner of this picture: And a more exposed sear here:

    Japanese Matchlock -Sword combo

Traditions die hard in Japan and when it came to the construction of arms and armour, to combine a sword with a matchlock like the one you're talking about (I've seen it and it's just a shopping mall curiosity), that was just not something that was done. Very little changed in the way things...

inletting tools - where to buy them

I have a carving tool set, but I use a 1/4" and 1/8" wood chisel from Home Depot far more often, they're cheap and I don't feel bad about being rough on them. I also made a few tools from old sawzall blades which I use to inlet triggers and pin lugs, just carefully ground and sanded them so as...

Any Reenactment groups in North Idaho area?

I don't know how far north you are, but come September 28th the Museum Comes To Life event will be held at the Idaho State Historical Museum in Boise. There are more than a few fellows there you can meet up with cover this period.

    Rebreeching a barrel

I had considered that it might affect the accuracy, whether or not that will be the case here I don't know though, the bore on the false muzzle will be rather extreme, probably going from just over .50 to clear the rifling and tapering to .58 or .62, it really is just a false muzzle and...

    Rebreeching a barrel

I plan on doing this as a build-a-long, probably start on it next month. If the gun works and I do a good job, hopefully it'll be of use to someone who wants to build one as well because they look like they'd be a lot of fun to shoot.

    Rebreeching a barrel

I'm looking to build another long gun pretty soon decided to choose between building a 1728 French musket, a Wender rifle or a Japanese Matchlock. I've wanted to build those guns for awhile now, being unsatisfied with the Indian 1728s and none too eager to pay more than a grand for a TRS kit...
