    Why .40 cal?

I built a 40 cal longrifle in 1978 from parts bought from many suppliers. It is accurate, not fussy about loads, and a great all around gun. If you are a hunter and can be careful not to shoot too far, it works for deer. I have taken mule deer, whitetail, coyote, grouse, rabbits, and squirrels...

Mince meat, fruit cake and figgy pudding

I love fruit cake and mincemeat pies. Usually make a pie every Thanksgiving and most of my relatives won't eat it. Leaves most of it for me. Yum!

    Cow Elk Load

Only elk I have killed with ML was a spike bull at about 100 yds. Used a 54 cal Browning mtg rifle with prb and 120 yrs 2f GOEX. Did the job.

    40 caliber load recommendation info

Mine is an old Douglas XX and shoots well with 395 ball and almost any charge of 3f from 35 to 85 grs. Have taken 2 deer with it , 55 grs and 85 grs powder. Both deer were less than 50 yds.

where to find good stout wooden ram rods???

A 3/8" wood rod should not break in a 40 cal barrel. Just keep from bending it above the muzzle and it will last a long time.

Deer Hunting with a Ruger Old Army

Several years ago I was reading historical accounts of the Texas rangers fighting the Comanches. One old ranger was asked if they used round balls or conical in their percussion revolvers. He replied that they used both but he preferred round balls because they made bigger wounds. Wish I could...

    .40 for deer??

I have killed several whitetail and 1 mule deer with the 40. Used 65 grs 3f and patched 395 ball. Keep your shots at 50 yds or less and don't shoot unless you have a clear shot. It works fine.

    Only one muzzle loading rifle

I would have to keep my Kibler Colonial 58 smoothbore. It's pretty, it's reliable, and shoots well with shot or ball. Has a wonderful lock that will outlast me. In the meantime it can handle almost any hunting or shooting endeavor. But......I'm not getting rid of the others. Too many good...

Considering trying some 3F in my .54 GPR, anyone out there ever do so?

In my 54 Santa Fe hawken 80 grs 2f or 70 grs 3f shoot about the same. Deer can't tell the difference

    Opinions on Dangler browning solution

I have used Danglers solution on several barrels and other parts. Works very well for me, produces a nice color and is not as fussy about a perfectly clean surface to begin with. I like it.

    .50 cal Kibler Colonial smoothbore

Mine shoots well with 562 ball and 010 patch Pretty accurate out to 50 yds.

    Wad use with prb

I have also found that cream of wheat or corn meal over the powder charge, then a patched round ball increases accuracy for me.

How many of your rifles have killed deer?

My 40 cal kentucky I built in 1977 has taken several, also 45 cal Yorktown from Cabin Creek. Looking forward to having a chance this year with the 58 smoothbore Kibler Colonial. Many others with the percussion guns.

Most accurate flintlock rifle you own

I have an old 45 caliber Yorktown built by Brad Emig at Cabin Creek. Large Siler lock, throws a shower of sparks and not fussy about the load you use.
