Flint works loose after multiple shots

I hope no one takes it as disparaging Chambers, particularly their Late Ketland. It’s an incredibly fast lock when set up right. I’ve heard many comments from bystanders that my .36 is one of the fastest flintlocks they’ve seen, rivaling many cap locks.

Flint works loose after multiple shots

My Chambers Late Ketland was notorious for spitting out flints. Along with a bit thinner leather and using somewhat flatter flints with no extreme hump , I raised teeth on both the cock and the top jaw. Haven’t had an issue since.

    Barrel shopping

I’ve got a flintlock offhand rifle in the planning stages and I’m looking at a 36-38” straight octagon 15/16” in .40. Heavier barrel to help with harmonics, shorter length for a steadier hold and a little less barrel to get that ball on its way. I have 42” and 44” barrels on my current rifles...

¿Dumb question about Kibler flintlocks and WTS listings on this site?

I sold my Kibler .40 SMR for a couple reasons. Mainly because I just wasn’t using it. The thrill for me is in the build. I tend to build a rifle, shoot it almost exclusively till the next build is done, then it sits while I shoot the new one. Once I built another .40 from a plank, the Kibler...

    Staining walnut

I made a stain from soaking walnut husks in water for a few weeks then boiling it. This is about 6 applications.

    .40 Cal Load Advice

Each is different. My Kibler .40 preferred .395 balls and 40 gr 3F. My latest build with a Rice barrel shoots more accurately with .390 balls and 45 gr. 3F.

    High Quality Hand Plane?

I got on a Montgomery Wards Master Quality plane habit and managed to find #3 thru #7’s and the smaller block planes Wards offered. They were made by Stanley and are basically rebranded Baileys. I was picky about condition and looked for pre-war examples. Don’t think I paid more than $50 for...

50/50 Dawn dish soap and water as patch lube

I switched to it a while back. I use one of those plastic Skoal tobacco containers with a cosmetic sponge inside and keep it well soaked with the 50/50 Dawn mixture. Press a patch in the sponge to get it soaked and load. At the end of the day just snap the cover back on. I find it a lot less...

    Clocks back…

Which time you prefer has a lot to do where you live in my opinion. I live on the eastern edge of Central time. It starts getting light about 4:30-4:45 in June on DST. I have no desire to have my dogs wake me at 3:30-4:00 AM if it started getting light on standard time.

Wet/dry metal sanding using light oi?

I use good old spit quite frequently sanding metal. Small scrap of paper, a little spit, and go to town. Maybe not a barrel, but a trigger guard or ramrod pipes I prefer it. Cleans up easy too with a quick wipe. Cheap oil like 3 in 1 also works, but messier. I’ve always thought of wet sanding...
