    False Muzzles

I've made a few false muzzles. i usually made them by drilling the two holes down the end of the blank and then parted off the piece for the false muzzle. I then soldered a washer the thickness of the parting tool on the face of the false muzzle to bring the grooves back into line. Worked well...

    Hern Revolutionary war howitzer

A lead ball is real heavy and you cannot use much powder in a 3" bore without a lot of pressure. Zinc scrap is quite cheap and makes a ball about the same weight as cast iron, which is what a lot of the original balls were made of. Rex Dev.

    Flintlock (lock) question?

Just got an L & R off TOTW a couple of weeks back and they said their locks are ready to but for an extra slick lock the tumbler and sear can be case hardened with Kasenite. Rex Dev.

    Bending Hamer

I did one the other day. Drilled and filed a hole in a piece of 1/4 flat bar so the nose of the hammer fitted snug, heated it and bent it right first time. With it held by the nose it's easier to see just what's going on. Rex Dev.

    I've been spiked

If it was mine I would cut a 1/8 drill off with only 1/2 an inch of flutes left, make an extension that just fits down the touch hole, silver solder it to the drill and have a go with it in a battery drill so I could control the speed and see if it is drillable. With the drill shortened it would...

    I've been spiked

Robin, that looks like something small and round like a pin at 11.30 in the pic

    Heavy Sigh

The buildup theory sounds right. Try cleaning on top of the powder if you want to clean between shots. Works for me. Rex Dev :front:

    I want a cannon

Before you get into building tricky stuff like big spoked wheels and stuff, take a look at some carronade pics. The carronade gives better value as far as bore verus o.d. and the swivelling ships mount is a piece of cake to make. I have a 3" carronade and it was no big deal to make. The last...

    Pictures/Plans for a Wiard Carriage?

If you go to the LINKS for the forum, in the Paulson Brothers link, under Cannons for sale, there are some good pics of a Wiard cannon carriage. Rex Devantier

Learned something new today about delayed ignition

I found 4F the best, 2pusehes on the primer but the most important was a clear gap between the powder and vent. Rex Dev

    cannon balls

It looks a bit techo but making an aluminium ball mold over 1" is not a real big deal, even with a smallish lathe. Will give details to anyone that wants them. Rex DEv. :m2c:

    Cannoneers!

Cannons are cool. I have a 3" carronade and a 4" mortar. The last mission for the carronade was shooting up a little Korean car. All went well. I use 2 fired shotgun cases full of 1F and 3" zinc balls I cast myself. I have just got around to castng the balls and have not tried the 4" ones in...

    Welding lock parts

The best system is T.I.G. or tungsten inert gas and Brownells sell a really good high nickel filler rod that case hardens really well. Rex Dev.

    Finish question

It doesn't hurt to mix a bit of vegetable turpentine with the first coat of linseed. It soaks in much quicker. Rex Dev.

    using lard

I use equal parts of lard, beeswax and chicken fat. The chicken fat I get from the rotisserie at the local supermarket. This mixture keeps the fouling as soft as any thing else I have tried. The only thing to use for heating is a double boiler. :redthumb: :m2c: Rex Dev
