Made four people happy this morning....

I have taken a few people to my little range behind my shop and let them send a few rounds into the woods. The phrase "silly grins" is an understatement. It definitely brings out the kid in all of us.

    July 4th Shooting

Went to a cookout at a relative's house and had some fun with the shootin irons at the back yard range. My 12 year old daughter joined the Hawken 50 club. Set her up with a 30 grain charge with a PRB and she loved it. She can't wait to go shooting again.

Shortages of round balls and caps

Check out Gander Mountain. They have quite a bit of black powder supplies.

    Shelf life of goex

I have 3 cans of late 70's Goex myself. I have shot several rounds using it and had no problems.

Lyman GPH shot great with re-sized bullet

Is it always necessary to resize your bullets when you cast them or is that dependent upon the individual gun you are shooting or the particular mold you are using?

Why do ML'ers sell so cheap?

After reading what guys do for tradition and originality for this sport,I would say ML shooters are not cheap because you can spend way more money than if you go buy a modern deer rifle.

    No RB's!

I have sorted through the wheel weights. The ones that are darker tend to be softer while the shiny ones tend to have more tin in them. I am going to be contacting some roofing companies to see if I can get some lead from them.

Why do ML'ers sell so cheap?

Supply and demand. Paintball was hot 12 years ago and now you can't hardly give away used equipment. I was given a ML and have since bought 2 more, a .44 Pietta pistol and a modern inline. I bought both of them for way less than what they sold for. A lot of people go out and buy a ML for the...

    No RB's!

I was given an electric range about 10 years ago. I started using it for powder coating. Then I got into muzzle loading and started buying bullet molds. when I discovered i could melt lead in a cast iron pan on a stove top, I went digging through the scrap metal pile for 2 cast iron pans I was...

    Ultra Hi Hawken 50 Cal

A late response but to the last question, it is the manual that goes with the gun. Since then I have shot upwards of 80 gr. in it and it seems fine with that and seems to be somewhat accurate. I have also aquired a modern day inline muzzle loader that I will take hunting, but I plan on using the...

Why some ingrediants in patch lube?

Oil of naughga. I once had a couch made of naughga. I believe it took about 4 naughgas to make that couch.

    Getting the caps on tight

It is a Pietta and I have a supply of #10 caps that came with the gun. I have an engine lathe so I will chuck them up in an adapter and try the emory cloth solution and see how that works. Thanks for all of the advice.

    Getting the caps on tight

I just bought an 1851 Confederate Army .44 cal pistol. I have fired a few conicals in it but I am going to switch to round ball ammo when I empty the current box. My question is how do you get the caps on tight enough initially to prevent a misfire. So far I am only loading one chamber at a time...

    How snug in the barrel?

I did check the outside dimensions of the barrel and the end of the barrel was actually larger than the base nearest the breech plug. I did shoot some round ball and some lubed conicals and the gun was fairly accurate at 30yards using open sights. This gun belonged to my mom's late 2nd husband...

    How snug in the barrel?

I have fired about 6 or so rounds in my Hawken 50 cal (Ultra Hi make). When I send a PRB down the barrel, the first third of the way down is snug. The last part gets loose enough that I can push the ramrod with one finger to seat the ball. I have quit using the gun until I know if this is normal...
