    Old age no fun

Indeed, like many most things seem heavier and distances seem further than they used to be. But my advice is don't change your fowler. Although it exposes my hypocrisy, somewhat but my antique 1840"s brass scope offsets my fading eyesight. So, my friend just start earlier, rest more often and...

    Best barrel rust preventer ?

Like many, back when I got into muzzle loading again I read and tried about all the latest and greatest rust prevention products, but I always come back to my original process: "thoroughly scrub with brass bore brush and swab clean with alcohol soaked patches, then wipe and park an oily 10W-30...

    Minnie ball accuracy?

Well stated, originally I tried to get more range with the PRB, but my rifle just wouldn't do it. Then I tired the R.E.A.L, but nope still 100yd max. However, a well lubed Lyman 425gr hollow base, pointed nose Minnie with 70gr of 777 worked great. I normally use 100gr in the swamp on hogs...

    Minnie ball accuracy?

Just to add a little more info, I hunt will hogs(not feral) in the Mississippi swamp and whitetail in Missouri, I use the rifle featured in the "avatar', which is outfitted with a very old Wollensak brass scope. It also shoots PRB good out to 100yd, but beyond that not so much. With regard to...

    Minnie ball accuracy?

Thought I would wait and read before posting my experiences. First, the Lee R.E.A.L. never proved to be very accurate in my rifle( Investarms .54 1:56ROT. However, the Lyman pointed, hollow based 425gr, three ring Minnie, backed with 70gr of 777 is extremely accurate and does not tumble(field...

    Just something I do.

Okie Hog, of all the responses, "months after being loaded" wins the I've never heard of that before, as I never leave any firearm loaded after the hunt. Needless to say, that's interesting.

How old is your hunting gun?

My totally customized Investarms/Thompson Center .54 is actually not that old, early 1990's? However the antique Wollensak brass scope is dated back to the mid 1800's. The See-Thru mounts were constructed from 1/2" key stock, while the hooded front sight was made from small steel tubing with a...

WHICH POWDER and HOW MUCH is TOO MUCH.

My little tricked out .54 "avatar" seems to handle the charge well and remains accurate from 0-125yds, although it kicks like a Missouri Mule. As for too much powder that's probably so, once I actually set a hog on fire at 10yds, but it stopped him.

    Just something I do.

Interesting number and content of responses, in the many years I've hunted with muzzle loaders everything that can happen has happened, thus I do everything to prevent a revisit of history.

    Just something I do.

As an added measure of confidence that the "first shot" is instantaneous, such that Mr Big Buck doesn't spook and/or Mr Boar doesn't charge due to failed or slow ignition. O'yes the capped nipple and charged bore are always dry and super clean, however I also fill the clean out screw hole with...

WHICH POWDER and HOW MUCH is TOO MUCH.

For what it's worth, I hunt hogs in the Mississippi swamp or maybe I should say they hunt me. That said, I use a Lyman mold to cast a solid lead 425gr hollow base, pointed projectile backed with 150gr of 777, such that if it doesn't knock him down I have a dense smoke screen to escape

    Hopkinsville,ky

Indeed that does seem to be the case here in western KY, so I primarily hunt for whitetail back in south central MO and wild hogs with the cajuns in the Mississippi swamp. Past experience, most groups/clubs seem to fade away.

I'm looking for thoughts on my plan

Although this does not fit with a traditional era approach, "Alaska" to me has a Mississippi Swamp element in that there are things, that will hunt humans. Therefore for the one gun approach would probably cause me to choose a .54 Pedersoli Sharps Sporting Rifle loaded with a 425gr hollow base...

How Many Process Their Own Game?

Indeed, I always have, but then I'm more than a little picky about processing. Of course, there are those endless saga stories, including one from a past neighbor who was a commercial butcher who claimed butchers never buy meat
