    The only issue is that it won't spark when it hits the frizen. You need a relatively sharp edge to get a ferro rod to spark. it would be best to replace the frizen with the ferro rod and keep the flint in the hammer.

    Sheath leather types and rust.

    I never have this problem as I ALWAYS dry my knives before I put them back in their sheaths. That is key, keeping them dry. I never oil my blades and I still don't get rust. Damp knives or sheaths is why I do get rust sometimes, even then it is because my kids or wife put them way damp.

    best steel for sparks

    5160 steel, Leaf springs need to get hotter than simple carbon steels in order to forge, but will make great strikers. I've made two so far and both spark great. Also, they make great knives.
