Casting Lead balls for the first time _ advice Needed...

I used a Bic lighter to soot up the mold. Hold it into to the flame. Can also use a candle if not windy. I dropped mine into a half filled 5 gal bucket of water. Check all your castings before shutting down so you can recast any rejects.

    some whitworth shooting

I would just go back to the regular nipples and replace them more often. Seems to me that the added cost (how much can that be?) would be worth not having that amount of aggravation

A vintage Sheffield knife - flea market find I hope to “restore”

Looks like a kitchen utility type knife. Oroinally would have been handled in a hard wood such as ebony, etc. Could have also been two slabs of stag. If found in the US it would be pre-1893 as it would have had to have "England" marked on the blade after that. The blade looks to be less than...

    Accuracy standard

In my neck of the woods there is generally two thoughts on accuracy. First are the competition shooters of all sorts who strive for groups much better than 1" at 100 yds. Then there are us average deer hunters. Every camp and hunter has its standards but mine is 2" to 2-1/2" at 50 yds. If my...

Fiber optic front bead and rear blank for a Lyman GPR

I like a very thin front sight. The factory fiber optics I've seen weren't small enough and looked clunky to me. My GPR has a thick blade front sight. I went to ebay and bought a small diameter variety pack that came in various colors. I filed a flat spot on the blade and epoxied my color choice...

    Stock drop

The obvious answer is that it was made from a bent tree. It was well known that Bedford had maples that weren't as straight as in Lancaster and further east.

    Cleaning jag getting stuck

I would add that in my rifles 3f seems to leave less fouling than 2f. also varies by mfr. I personally find Schuetzen to be the worst offender but others have found differently.

    Cleaning jag getting stuck

Not quite enough info but I'll try to help. You said cleaning but not whether it's range cleaning or end of day. I'll start at the end. For end of day cleaning take the barrel off remove the nipple and put breech end in a bucket of warm (not hot) water with a little bit of dish or laundry soap...

    Peep sight

Most of my rifles now wear peeps although they are the bulky Lyman 57's. I like these smaller styles better.

    How tight??

Some of mine are finger tight but on a couple I need a light tap of a screwdriver. I'll have to pay attention on my 54's. I like stout loads.

    Flame-Thrower

Congrats on all the great photos. I know how hard it can be to get a pic of both pan and muzzle flames. Well done!
