    What leads you to believe it portrays 1848? They were talking of banning hydraulic mining, which did happen in the 1880’s. And hydraulic gold mining really didn’t start until the 1850’s. I’m thinking it portrays the late 1870’s or early 1880’s, which his Remington conversion would be correct.

    I suppose the English, and the US during the civil war, did it wrong for a lot of years. Enfields were indeed loaded with lubed, paper patched, smooth side bullets. I also understand that long range BP shooters load cartridges with paper patched bullets.

    I suppose you don’t spend much time in labs. Most flammables are stored in glass. Alcohol, acetone, etc.
