Black bear harvest with .58 Hawken

Not sure how apparent it is from this still from my GoPro video, but I had to take the shot lying on my back with my rifle resting on a walking stick/monopod with a shooting yoke.

And crony your loads to confirm knockdown power over distance. :) Since then, I also worked out a bipod made of two dowels. Put a screw through them to make a hinge and cut off the excess metal with a hacksaw. Then took some 16p nails and cut the heads off, drilled into the feet of the bipod...

Black bear harvest with .58 Hawken

Lionel Talamante is an excellent houndsman. He trees and frees every day, so one way or another the predators leave their deer and elk alone.

Black bear harvest with .58 Hawken

Below is my post about the bison. I crony'ed it after and, past 50 yards, it just doesn't have much oomph with a PRB. I don't like the accuracy loss with boolits in my .58's slow twist. https://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/threads/buffalo-hunt-descending-slide-whistle.111097/

Black bear harvest with .58 Hawken

But I didn't have a .45, so..... ;) She just didn't want to go down. Happens that way sometimes, at least to me. I've put four centerfires into a bison cow's brain and she was still kicking. Whoops. Didn't mean to include the hyperlink when I leveraged some of the text. But yeah, there's...

Black bear harvest with .58 Hawken

Took this sow on Friday morning. Same guide and location as my mountain lion hunt on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation. The tribe has been shut down since the beginning of COVID and they had to completely cancel last year's hunting season. That's a significant source of revenue they didn't get...

    Flintlock dragoons with holsters

Thank you. That is helpful information. I don't know that the pistols came from France. I know he came over in 1850 and was killed in 1852. The pistols may have come with him or he may have gotten them once in NM.

    Flintlock dragoons with holsters

What are potential models of dragoon flintlock pistols in 1850s NM with possible origin in France. Probably way too broad of a question but any direction is appreciated. That he was a newly arrived immigrant may help some. I.e. they were probably not a well to do family heirloom worn daily.

    Flintlock dragoons with holsters

My 4x great uncle was killed in 1852 in New Mexico and had a pair of flint lock dragoon pistols with holsters stolen from him. Attached are pictures of a flyer and newspaper notice. The Spanish version is more intact than the English. He immigrated from France with my grandfather in 1850. Any...

    Hang fire

Haven't had a hangfire yet, but I've got a sticky trigger I need to work on. More than a few times I've gone through my 10-count and squeezed figuring the trigger wasn't budging only to have it go off just as I was about to let go. Since my mind was going that way, my head has already shifted...

Always be prepared when approaching shot game.

I almost did this last year. Thought I'd gotten a good heart shot on a 2yo bull bison on my second round into him. Turns out that I'd only broken his front legs. As we approached, he went to jump up swinging towards me. Instinctively, I reared my rifle and went to swing the butt at him. A voice...

    Bison

Very nice, sir! I drew for the Ft Pecks rez last year and tried my .58 with PRB at 100 yards. Bull shrugged it off and got away with no blood. Ended up harvesting with modern rifle on another bull. By the will of the gods, I drew again this year. Crony'd the PRB load and it went below 1000 ft...

    Local Paper Write Up

Thanks for the tip. I pulled out some rubber corks and drilled into them. Bought a bunch for speedloaders I made.
