Coins used for making front sights?

I'm on rifle no. 6 and every one of them has a silver coin front site soldered into a dove-tailed base. Never had much of an issue with glare.

    Metal Finishes

Anyone have formulas and instructions for a "greyed antique" metal finish like the one used by Mike Brooks in his gun building tutorial?

I liked Birddog6's answer, but he forgot to tell you that you need a course, medium and fine stone and oil to keep all of those tools sharp, because they just won't cut if they're dull. You might want to invest in a book on sharpening...

    Hello from Illinois

I found this site yesterday. I have been building and shooting muzzleloaders for 28 years. A long time ago some friends dragged me to Friendship, where they said there were no women and children. I found that to be untrue. On the second trip, my wife and 3 kids picked me up to go home. They...

    Finish question

Have you tried Herter's french red stock filler on walnut? If not, try some. Brush it on and then hand rub until complete absorbed. I applied Chambers Traditional Oil Finish directly over it, using the suggestions in the Gunsmith of Grenville County. LJ
