    Your first muzzleloader?

My first rifle was a ??? My husband and I purchased it at a rendezvous and there is a long story about how we ended up at a rendezvous! One Sunday, we were out for a drive in the mountains of New Mexico. Saw a number of paper plates with arrows on them and decided to follow the arrows. We came...

    Murphy's Oil Soap,

I realize that this thread is pretty old but...Having read the comments, or most of them, I felt a desire to respond. I have used the Murphy's Oil Soap/Hydrogen Peroxide/Alcohol mixture with great success. When I first started using it, I had to start calling it "Bad Ass Gun ****"!! I have a 45...

    Any Candle making recipe"s

I was told years ago to freeze my candles to make them last longer. I dipped beeswax candles a couple of years ago. Froze one of the candles and not the others. The frozen one did last longer although only by an hour or so.

    dutch oven beard?

I have not made meringue pies but I have other two crust pies. My favorite thing to do though with a DO is to make crepes on the lid! Turn the lid so the inside of the lid is your skillet, place it on a trivet with coals underneath. Grease well and use your favorite crepe recipe. Fill with fresh...

    wool blanket find

If I want a New Pendleton blanket, I am close enough to Pendleton OR to go to the store and pick up "seconds". There might be a small hole or a stripe that is not quite straight but otherwise, they are great. I have one that I picked up about 5 years ago for $45 that had a tag that said the...

    dutch oven beard?

When I bake bread in the DO, I also do not use a spacer. What I have learned is to take the DO off the bottom coals about 2/3 the way through my cooking time. Never had a bread burn yet. In answer to this general post: if it can be or is cooked/baked in an oven at home, it can be cooked/baked...

    Knapsack Mashed Potatoes

I have made mashed potatoes without butter and milk (at home) and dehydrated them. Then at camp, I simply place the dehydrated potatoes in a cup or bowl, cover (barely) with hot water and let them reconstitute. I sometimes need to add water to fully reconstitute. Then if I have them, I add...

    Covering for a pot/jar

I ran across the directions to make beeswax infused cloths for coverings, sandwich wraps, etc., to avoid the plastic bags used today. While I was reading the posts on making them, I thought that this is probably something that colonial women might have made for use in their pantries. The...

    lawn mower blade knives?

Had a throwing knife made of spring steel. It had a nice balance, just right for me. Unfortunately after the 3rd or 4th throw at a block, it snapped the point off. Hubby reground the point and on my next competition, the blade snapped in two. Poor choice of steel in my opinion.

    lawn mower blade knives?

My husband made a knife from a saw blade 29 years ago - it was not perfect by any stretch but I have NEVER had to sharpen it. Cuts thru just about anything like it is butter!
