Any book suggestions for 12 year old Nephew ?

A book that I read as a youngster is called Make Way For The Brave. It's a fiction book based on the mountain men. In it the kid even uses a flintlock Hawken. This is an old book but it can be found on BookFinder or other sites. Not expensive at all.

    lubing a grease-grooved bullet

Keep your bullets greased "in the groove" just like you're doing. Writers don't know it all.

    Which Smoothbore?

Make mine a 20 gauge. With a round ball it has a little velocity edge over the 16 when used with similar powder charges. With shot loads they are pretty much the same.

Speer lists a swaged ball for .433". Track of the Wolf offers both swaged and cast balls in that size. Dixie offers balls in .435" diameter. Take your pick.

    Blood and Thunder

There's lots of good reading ahead of you. For more about Kit Carson, try "Kit Carson and His Three Wives." That was written by a fellow named Marc but that shouldn't bother you. Also, "Kit Carson, A Pattern For Heroes." If you read about the mountain men enough you might find the wants for...

    Bullet/ball for H. E. Leman rifle

Okay, we can assume that the rifle is not an original Leman. Now, about the bore, a muzzleloading rifle when used with a round ball fires a ball that is undersize to the bore. That ball is wrapped in a cotton or linen patch. It is the patch that fills the grooves of the rifling and seals the...
