    Brought home my old forge

Looks like it is an universal motor with a commutator and brushes. And fairly well protected from the elements. I would take it apart and clean it up, especially the commutator. You want bright copper, you can clean up the comm with emery paper, a strip of 80 or 100 grit would be OK...

    Brought home my old forge

Bushings and two pieces of bushing stock to machine bushings from. One of three boxes in the shop.

    Brought home my old forge

Post a photo of the motor. This way I can see if it is of open construction or a "drip proof" that somewhat keeps water out.

    Brought home my old forge

Typo: Should be "turn the O,D of the bushing to fit the housing".

    Brought home my old forge

Bushings are available. Brass and bronze. And oil lite. McMaster Carr stocks bushings of all types. I have a box of bushings of many sizes, maybe over 100. I keep a stash as I often work with old machinery that needs repair. Sometimes have to bore the bushing on a metal lathe for fitting...

    Somewhat Primitive Knives

I was an avid Roosevelt Elk Hunter back when I started making knives. The blade and handle are shaped such that you may place your index finger on the tip of the blade and clutch the handle with your other fingers. This way you will not cut your other hand when you are skinning or reaching...

    Somewhat Primitive Knives

I have a large binder full of knife designs, many of them mine, what ever popped up in my head while day dreaming. I think some of them will be realistic "Period" knives to match our muzzle loading weapons. I will be hot into some forging in 6 months or so when the new shop is suitable. The...

    Somewhat Primitive Knives

These were all made about 1980, back when I was learning. Gave up knife making for many years due to other commitments with the family. Now I am easing back into blacksmithing, forging, and blade making. Meanwhile I have been collecting tools and supplies for a serious blacksmith shop that...

    Somewhat Primitive Knives

Fooling around in the shop today. Found a box of blades and knives I made in about 1980. This one was forged from a piece of steel identical to the piece in this photo. Used a coal forge. An Anvil that pre dated the American Civil War and has been in the family since. And a companion...

Vise for hammer & chisel engraving

Good info, I had no idea of the GRS pricing myself. If you are serious about anything, buy the best and cry once!

Vise for hammer & chisel engraving

The vise you found on Amazon looks worth the price, I would give it a try. This one came in a box of antique tools I bought in Denver, CO. Patented May 2, 1899. I had to make the pins and the key as both were missing. Still works great. Note the bottom is reversible, with round side...

    Knife forging questions....

Lots of old wives tales about rebar. Sure, there is made in china junk. But high quality rebar of known alloys and heat treating is used in critical applications like bridges, high rise buildings, parking garages, and the like. The rebar used in these applications has certifications that are...

    What size container?

Hmm. I have never seen it happen but it has been mentioned many, many years prior to the internet. Maybe the guys talking abut it were dreaming. Or the guy that saw it happen was killed and could not write about it. Who knows, I think it pays to be cautious around any powders. RCBS...
