Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair

Is that Blue Cat Buttonworks, or another Blue Cat? Our camp is just down the hill from the CCC building flying the white flag with multi Fleur-de-lis. Also camping with us will be Mike and Kris. Kris is the glass blower making French and English authentic recreations of glasses and bottles...

Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair

Just two weeks to go until the 18th Century Market Fair in Maryland April 25-28, 2024. There are 95 registered sutlers. There will be hundreds of campers. It's a 4 day event. Hope to see you there!

    Making vent liners

My Centermark came with an Allen screw as the liner, but the recessed end faces the pan. You just use an Allen wrench if you need to remove it.

Fort Frederick 18th C Market Fair, MD, April 21-24, 2022

I know that spot, right around where Stan and Conny would camp. (sadly Stan passed about 2 years ago) We usually set up on the field road that heads west down the hill, straight across from the CCC building (where the auction is held.) Just down from Danny Eisenhower.

Fort Frederick 18th C Market Fair, MD, April 21-24, 2022

Our camp is usually just across from Loyalist Dave's camp. We fly a French white flag with multi gold Fleur de Lis. If you stop by, ask for John. I'm usually busy Friday collecting sutler donations for the Saturday Auction. And busy again with the auction Saturday afternoon. Kristen will be...

Fort Frederick 18th C Market Fair, MD, April 21-24, 2022

After a two-year break, Fort Frederick will hold the annual 18th Century Market Fair April 21-24. Campers should pre-register by printing out the application and postmarking by March 15. If you don't pre-register the camper cost is higher at the gate during the event. There are over 80...

    Pondering Shot...

My wife and I hunt squirrels with flintlocks with our daughter who uses a modern shotgun. When we clean the squirrels we can always tell the ones shot with modern shells. The pellets from the modern gun are always very deformed. The flintlock shot squirrels have pellets that have no...

    Ft. Frederick market faire

Even though the Fort Frederick Market Fair for 2020 had to be cancelled, the Friends of Fort Frederick are encouraging people to support the sutlers by shopping on their online stores or emailing them. For many of these people, the fair is their biggest source of sales for the year. The Friends...

    Barrel length?

I have a Hudson Valley Fowler made by Ken Gahagan. It is 12 gauge with a 56 inch barrel. Deadly on squirrels and I got a six point with it too. Why 56 inch? In the Grinslade book on American fowlers that barrel length was very typical. I wanted a gun that is taller than me. It is not as much...

    Issue with a flying flint

Are your flints flat topped or angled? Angled ones can slip. Make sure the flint is all the way back toward the screw threads. You might need to cut or punch a hole in the center of the leather to allow the flint to be positioned all the way back against the threaded bolt. Also, you need to...

    Rayl Steel Blunderbuss Barrel Load

You could contact Ed Rayl and ask if he has a recommended max load. You also might try working your way up to a load you can handle, starting lighter at maybe 100 grains and adding 20 grains each time until your shoulder tells you to quit. You might find you don't want to even try to reach...

    Squirrel hunters

I've always cooked them like a venison roast in a lidded roasting pan. Cut into serving size pieces, lay in the pot over a bed of onion rings, add pats of butter and lots of red wine and spices to taste, and cover with more onion rings. Roast in the oven maybe 350 or 400 degrees. Cook until...

    FLINTLOCK FIREPOWER

Dave, I'll be there, cutting quills in the sutler tent. By the way, I think Amanda left her tent bag in our camp at FF last week. Stop by to pick it up. See you there!
