How short of a barrel makes sense?

Thanks for the info! 0-100 yds not enough difference for me to swing a longer barrel. The more research I do the more I see getting something around 30" +/-.

How short of a barrel makes sense?

Haha Yeah im not thinking 24" is going to the right length. So far based on what I've been reading I'd like a barrel length in the low 30's. Most kits either offer a 30" or a 36" with nothing that I've found in between. So I am trying to weigh the options between those two sizes.

How short of a barrel makes sense?

This is the kind of info I love to see. With this and a few other things I've seen, which I'll include in this thread, Im staring to get an idea of what I want. Thank you

How short of a barrel makes sense?

I hope that im not coming across as antagonistic towards anyone on here. Really im just trying to have a conversation on the reasoning of barrel length choice. I am very new to all of this and I am using this forum as as a fireside chat. Never intending to aggravate anyone. And so far I've...

How short of a barrel makes sense?

I'm not sure a white sheet would work. Blackpowder is not very efficient, I've read only 40-45% actually gets converted to gas. I imagine there would always be unburnt powder come out the end. Best way would be taking a barrel and cutting an inch or so off after each shot and measuring...

How short of a barrel makes sense?

I wish I could find some ballistic stuff online somewhere. Everything is geared toward modern bullet design and inlines. Not at all what I'm interested in. I have plenty of centerfire weapons if I wanted to go that route. Thats kinda why I started this thread, to get some personal insight from...

How short of a barrel makes sense?

Forgive me cause I'm a total newbie but the stuff I've been reading suggests that at least the trade guns seemed to get shorter and shorter as time went on. Here is an excerpt from the track of the wolf website. The book Trade Guns of the Hudson's Bay Company 1670 - 1970 by S. James Gooding...

How short of a barrel makes sense?

I agree to an extent. But I also believe people tend to do what they always have without too much questioning. I do see a trend with shorter barrels in the trade gun realm as time went on. So someone either saw the benefit or it was just cheaper... My main goal isn't to have the shortest barrel...

How short of a barrel makes sense?

I'd never argue with that. Whatever makes you happy is most important. Besides the fact that if you really enjoy the way its set up you'll have a stronger mental game and it'll perform in your hands better than maybe even a more efficient piece of equipment you don't like.

How short of a barrel makes sense?

The more I think about this, I think this might be too heavy, too unwieldy. Kinda going against what I'm after here. I do like the idea of it though

How short of a barrel makes sense?

Not so worried about the length during shooting. More about carrying it around. And dealing with the day to day of it. Where I'm at in Arizona, no big deal, its wide open. But back home in Montana, the forest is super thick, with lots of underbrush. That's where the shorter guns seem better to me.

How short of a barrel makes sense?

That is a beautiful gun! Something I could see having. Not necessarily what I would hunt with everyday. A bit fancy for that. But a great idea. That in an iron version could be cool
