Has anyone rebuilt a muzzle loading gun that has been through a fire?

Barrel is a tad under 34 inches. I will lap the bore as it is chewing patches, likely residual scale in the bore. I will post some targets after I have lapped it. I still have to Harden and temper the cap box spring as its a little weak. I am so please to have manage to resurrect her.

Has anyone rebuilt a muzzle loading gun that has been through a fire?

Proofed her today, all well, fired 5 rounds off hand, shoots as well as ever. Bore needs a bit of a clean up, again, but more shooting should sort it out. Its not actually a tack driver, 1 in 110 inches twist, 120 grains of of two F brings the point of impact up to the point of aim at 50 yards...

Has anyone rebuilt a muzzle loading gun that has been through a fire?

Lock is now refurbished, the springs a lovely fire blue, all parts including lock plate case hardened, fitted back in the rifle, lock works as well as it did before the fire. Beaut job by my mate. Will proof the barrel separately late in the week and report the results. I also have a nice new...

Has anyone rebuilt a muzzle loading gun that has been through a fire?

That is the plan, just the way things worked out, will proof the barrel out of the stock, I am 95% sure it will be ok. She hold well again, there is still some tension in the springs, but not enough.

Has anyone rebuilt a muzzle loading gun that has been through a fire?

I picked her up last week, just getting ready to bring her back on the plane to SA, next trip back. Will sort out the lock next. I have to get a replacement ball mould, .71 and they seem to be hard to get at the moment, last one I bought from Track of the Wolf, just a bag mould, but fine for...

Gus that is what I am hoping will be the case.

Has anyone rebuilt a muzzle loading gun that has been through a fire?

The springs can be softened reshaped, hardened and tempered, the sear, tumbler and lock plate can be re case hardened. I will take the barrel off the rifle, and remove the cone, strap it to a heavy timber and let it off, that way I can make up a new barrel if the old one fails. The rifle is...

It has now been restocked in English walnut, will pick it up in November, will repair the fire damage to the lock and re proof the barrel. Will order a new sling for it from Track Click on photo for the whole rifle.

An American Percussion Long Rifle That Has Been In My Family for Many Generations Possibly by John Hinds

I agree, 1840 1850, may be an. earlier barrel used. A good honest old rifle, to be treasured, I would take her out and make meat with her again. Lovely having the family provenance, if only these old girls could speak. Suspect a replacement lock, at some time. She looks like she should handle...

Has anyone rebuilt a muzzle loading gun that has been through a fire?

My custom stock maker has made a great start on restocking my FBG, he is using fine English Walnut. I will have to improve the finish of the metal parts in due course. Will post again with more photos as they come to hand. He is currently inletting the cap box.
