Sorely needed day at the range.

I do most of my shooting at a public range here in KY. It's located on state wildlife reserve land and maintained by a local gun club, but open to all comers every day of the year. We have 10 rifle benches and 6 pistol stations under cover with berms out to 300 yds. There is no range officer at...

    Volley gun

I believe the British Navy issued a 7-barreled volley gun for a few years around the turn of the 19th century. It was .40-.45 caliber and did indeed fire all seven balls at a single trigger pull. The idea was for men in the rigging to fire down onto the enemy deck during boarding operations. It...

Never know what you will find in a musket barrel

This just proves how true my First Rule of Firearms is: NEVER trust what somebody tells you about whether or not a gun is loaded--always check for yourself!

    Stitch to prevent fraying

To add width to the front, cut to strip twice the width that you want to add - example need 12" overall, cut to 12" strips the length of the front. Seam them to the front, fold in half and stitch again. It will work like the front placket of your modern button front shirt. You will then have 6"...

    Stitch to prevent fraying

It's called an overcast stitch, and there are a number of ways to accomplish it. basically you pierce the fabric in the seam allowance, then bring the thread around the cut edge before piercing again. I have a few old tailoring books around here; I'll see if I can find an illustration and post...

    Standard Deviation

There is another thing to remember about all statistical analysis as it relates to probability. That is what we're talking about here-the probability of a particular outcome occurring based on the analysis of observable data gathered from previous attempts/outcomes. When stating a probability...

    Where do you shoot primarily?

Private range with a small covered line, 2 benches, and backstops out to 300 yds. It also has a "cowboy action" setup and a stocked fishing hole. $25/yr for 24/7/365/access.

Where you personally Shoot is the Range Controlled, or Uncontrolled

Like everybody else in this part of KY I used to shoot out in the abandoned coal mine "stripper cuts", but those were closed some years ago supposed ly for reclaimation but most likely for liability issues. Now I belong to a rod and gun club that has a nice range with a smal covered firing line...

    musket vs #11 caps

My last shooting session was a woods walk in cool, VERY damp weather. Using 50 gr 3FFF goex/440 ball/linen patch/spit for lube/ Remington #11 cap in a late 70's era CVA mountain rifle. I went 23 rounds without cleaning the barrel or the nipple. At that point I swabbed one damp patch and two dry...

    replacement lock

I bought the small percussion RPL lock from L&R Locks for my CVA mountain rifle. Took about 2 hours to install as some small amounts of wood had to be removed inside the mortice. Man, is it a great lock! Having a fast, sure, responsive lock has improved my offhand shooting 100%.

Hunter brings loaded rifle to the Range!

Boy, stories like this make me glad that I am almost always alone when I shoot at my club's range. No worries about anyone's stupidity but my own.

    Foolish use of Brown Bess?

Well, If it was me (and it was, sort of) I'd have the gun checked out by a competent smith. If it checks out I'd say shoot it! I have a mid 19th century musket that I shoot regularly with no apparent ill effects. The Bess was a ubiquitous model in its day, so without some factor that would make...

    Sourdough Starter question

My wife keeps a crock of sourdough starter on the counter all year 'round and yours sounds just like what I'm looking at. Good eatin'! Halfdan

    Ramrod?

I have a Suhl .69 percussion musket (original) but the steel rammer look like it belongs to a much later- maybe cartidge- rifle. Can anybody advise on what a proper ramrod would be for this type musket? The channel is narrow so I assume some kind of metal rod. Thanks, Halfdan

    Remington VS CCI Caps

I've always had trouble with CCI caps fitting on the nipple--they're usually just a hair small. The Remingtons fit perfectly (for me) and give me much more consistent fire. That being said, RWS is the best, In my book, with Remington a close second. I found Remington caps at my local Rural...
