WITHDRAWN $75 dropped price New Traditions St. Louis Hawken stock with furniture

I have heard rumors that not all of these were butchered at the factory... This one is tempting to replace the stock that came in my kit. I'll have to think about it a little more.

How safe is it to use lead round balls while hunting?

Try powder coat if you are concerned, depending on how it distorts no lead will be exposed. What I don't know is how round ball coats. You will definitely need a no stick silicone sheet or no stick aluminum foil.

Polishing the bore on a new ML.............

My suggestion is to use a felt pellet and White Diamond metal polish. Cuts fast and leaves a smooth surface. Here is the tool I built for holding the pellets, a #8-32 brass screw and a couple brass nuts. These have been cut down with a drill and file to better fit a 357 bore. You do need a ball...

Glad I got a Cap making kit

Duco and solvent is an interesting choice, I'll have to remember that.

Glad I got a Cap making kit

It's a bit more money, but Dixie Gun Works has the kit and chemicals, safer place to order if anyone is concerned.

    Mystery tool/gauge

Turn counter? Maybe part of a positioning device for a lathe carriage?

    Blowing down the barrel

I only use a brass hammer when pounding large balls into small bores, makes a bullet shaped projectile. Really rough on the ram rod though.

    Tips for a Casting Newby?

From Ingot to Target: A Cast Bullet Guide For Handgunners, Table of Contents - Fryxell/Applegate there is a PDF link in the upper left side, should have pretty much all the info you need on general casting.

    Options on finish

Old nails and vinegar, test to make sure you like the color, and it takes a long time to create the iron acetate. Ferric nitrate crystals are pretty cheap, mix with distilled water. Heat either and you should get a decent brown, then cover with oil or other top coat.

    Lets see those Range Boxes!!

I have two old tool boxes up in the attic, there were there when we moved in. That attic has saved me several times now, lots of useful stuff up there. I'll have to pull both of those down and see what I can build. I'll probably still leave the bottle of powder in a metal ammo can, just to make...

    Percussion caps

Yikes, I beat the $21.50 at a gunshow, and the guy knew how difficult they were to get. I paid $15 each 100 and should have grabbed the other 3 tins he had while I was there. Was being the nice guy and leaving a few for the next person. Not sure I'll do that again.
