    Dangerous Custom Build

Robtattoo~ These rifles weren't substandard. They weren't cosmetically identical. Not being cosmetically identical does not a sub-standard rifle make. The only real issue was the bore of one rifle. I asked him to return the rifle for me to inspect and if needed, correct. For reasons known...

    Dangerous Custom Build

One thing I forgot to mention in my earlier post. Because Mr. DeOrian was so put out about the amount of time it took to complete both rifles (in reality, it was about 2 years. I'm not a full-time builder) I deducted $750.00 from the final price as my way of apologizing for going over the time...

Sorry, Swampy, but you didn't see me logged on here. I haven't been on this forum in so long I had to send a request for my password! Rick

    Dangerous Custom Build

I logged onto this site today after receiving a phone call from someone who has seen this thread and wanted to know the rest of the story. I appreciate the heads up as I have not been here for quite some time. After reading through the posts, I am encouraged to see that at least some recognize...

What visee/vises do you have to help hold your gun builds

I use two Wilton Vises that I purchased from Lowe's. I padded the jaws with leather from an old uniform belt and I also use oak blocks. The vises are spaced about 3' apart and work very well for me. Rick

    Using lye on wood

Len, I've never used it on maple but I have on white oak and cherry. I used Easy-Off oven cleaner because I couldn't find lye proper. I sprayed it on then hosed it off with a garden hose. Make sure you wear eye protection as well latex gloves. This stuff is caustic! I let the wood dry...

    Vice Padding

I used a section from an old, 2" wide uniform belt. I attached it to the jaws with liquid nails. I also use two blocks of oak that span the width of the jaws. This set-up has worked well for me the past 10 years. Rick

Pulling breach plug on a Pedersol Frontierman

I have a Pedersoli Blueridge rifle and I know the vent liner goes through the breechplug. This may be the case with yours. Try removing the liner then see if that plug won't come out. Hope this helps. Rick

    First blood with poor boy

Here are a couple more photos of that rifle. Hope you don't mind, GangGreen. The heart of this gun is a 42" Rice barrel with round-bottom rifling and an L&R lock with Davis double set triggers. I stained the stock black with an alcohol-based stain called, "Onyx." Once dry, I wooled it back...

    First blood with poor boy

I think Jenny is a fine name! As far as the turkey goes, even a blind hog finds a nut every now and then! Glad you like the rifle, GangGreen. By the way, isn't that one of those fine box calls from Gobbler Knob? :rotf:

    Poor Boy

Again, thank you all. Mule Brain, that stain is a work in progress. It's been brewing since October of 2006. The important thing is to use old barbed wire. The newer wire is made of stuff that won't have the same effect. I put mine in a glass mason jar with a glass lid...

    Poor Boy

Thanks for your kind words. Tommy, the profile is my own based on the customer's dimensions. Ott supplied the blank. Rick

    Authenticity in building?

Cody is right on. Build what you want. If I am building for a customer and they want one thing, but tell me to use parts from a different school, I suggest the correct furniture. However, if they are set on a particular feature that clashes with the school, "the customer is always right." Rick

    Poor Boy

This rifle was stained using a brew of apple cider vinegar with very old barbed wire disolved in it to produce a crude form of aqua fortis. I rubbed in boiled linseed oil using 0000 steel wool. It was sealed with tung oil and then I finished it with several coats of Johnson's paste wax. The...

    Calling all ash stocks

It's not a gunstock, but this call is curly ash. I finished it using Minwax, 'Natural' stain. The paddle and base are highly figured walnut. Rick
