    Loyalists

Some of my ancestors lived in Oconee Co SC, and were sentenced to hang for sedition in 1778 as I recall. The sentences were never carried out and the family continued to live in the area for generations.

    Hello from Georgia

If you're looking for a club to shoot and put what you learn here into practice, Blue Ridge Mountain Men around Cornelia in North Ga and Brushy Creek ML down in Lenox are good people to learn from.

Need help with locating some patching material

Maybe try onlinefabricsttore(.)com They sell Cotton, denim, duck and linen. I used to buy 6x6 inch samples for a buck apiece to measure thickness before committing to a larger purchase, and the sample was enough for a dozen test shots at the range.

    From CA moving to Florida

Depending where in FL you’re moving to, Escambia River Gun Club (Pensacola), Jefferson Longrifles ((Tallahassee) and Florida Frontiersmen (Ft Meade) all offer scheduled ml matches. Probably others, but those are the ones I know about.

    Dumb question

Frizzen open with leather stall over it, toothpick in touch hole. Check local game laws to verify that constitutes an unloaded gun (it would in any state I’ve hunted in, but some states are getting weird these days).

    Many misfires first time shooting

Misfire, as in the pan flashed but the main charge didn’t go , or the pan didn’t flash? A sharp flint should address the pan not flashing. If you work the lock in a dark room with the barrel empty, you want to see lots of white yellow sparks falling into the pan and dancing around. If...

    New member from AL

The Alabama State ML Association (contacts Troy & Meg Millican) just sent out a schedule of events, with most (or maybe all) at Magic City Gun Club or Brierfield Park. Those events would let you see or participate in traditional ML shooting. Davy Crockett Longhunters up in Lawrenceburg TN is...

Want to get into Muzzleloading and have a lot of questions so I figured I would post in this forum.

Buy Eric Byes book on Flintlocks - available through the NMLRA (which you should consider joining).

    4f powder

Muzzleloading clubs will sometimes put together an order of 25 or 50 pounds. As I recall, the proper and legal way was for the club to canvass its bona fide members, determine that Tom was interested in 5 lb of 3F, Dick needed 1 lb 4F & 6 of 2F, etc, collect the money, order in 25 or 50 pound...

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

Weird numbers. If you’ve sighted in for a center hold at 25 yards, I’d expect you to be hitting 6 to 8 inches below point of aim at 100yds. Chronograph a few shots so you have an idea what MV you’re getting. Take somebody with you and let them try a few shots on the off chance it’s a...

    Clean with paper towel?

I’ve used blue Scott shop towels from a roll and white (paper) Rags in a box. Cheap & convenient, but There is a risk of leaving soggy paper lint and debris down at the breech which could dry and catch a spark. Use a breech scraper or some such to be sure you’re leaving a clean breech and...

    Novelty shooting match suggestions please.

Here's a picture of Brushy Creek ML's barrel mounted saddle. It was pretty shaky, and a range officer held the shooter's rifle while he/she mounted and got their balance. The target could be straight ahead, or at an oblique angle. Along the theme of shooting from an unnatural feeling...

    Witnessed Unsafe Behaviors

Imagine yourself serving as range officer And having responsibility for keeping a match running smooth and safely. You take a look down the left side of the line and when you turn your head back to the right, you see a guy blowing down the barrel. Did he just fire and empty the rifle, or did...

    RB past 50 yards?

Muzzleloading Silhouette matches shoot targets out to 200 yards, and it took being able to clang steel 4 or 5 times out of 5 at that range to have a decent chance to win. PRB can hold a decent group beyond 100 yards, but you need to judge the distance pretty accurately or else know that bear...

First shot hits the bull, then-

Well, for your first shot your muscles are less fatigued, you’re mentally more relaxed, etc. Try this: before raising the gun to your shoulder, close your eyes and raise the rifle to firing position. When you open your eyes, are you seeing a pretty good sight picture? Adjust your feet until...
