    Illinois Late Winter Antlerless Season

I'll be out there if I can get enough firewood up for the weekend. It's always been a tough hunt in the past, but I certainly need some meat for the freezer.

    Successful ML Muley

Great kills! My favorite hunts have been ML mulie hunts. Those photos are giving me the itch!

    Rifle Recommendation

+ 1 for GPR accuracy. I have a .54, and with .535's and 100 grns. Goex, I outgrouped my scoped Mossberg 500 with Rem. copper solids shooting both at 100 yards.

    Lyman Great Plains .54 Caliber

I killed two 10-point mule deer (4x4's for you westerners) in the last 3 years with the Lyman GPR. I have the .54 cal. 1-60 barrel. Killed both with 100 grns. Goex and .535 RB., which I find to be very accurate at 100 yards. One buck dropped in 30yds, the other larger buck dropped in his tracks...

Wow, what success! 58, you da man!

    With time running out...

Our 3-day muzzy season has ended. Mine went well. Things got exciting when I spotted a dandy buck that Jim Zumbo would have been proud of (then again, maybe not). He came out late and fed with does in cut corn, I knew they wouldn't move before dark, so I tried unsuccessfully to close the...

    Kilt me some breakfast

Kilt a spike this mornin'. 80 yds. That was easy. Drug him uphill 200 yds. That was hard. Had fresh tenderloin fer breakfast though  fried in olive oil spray. Still got one firearm tag left for this weekend and 2 ML tags for next week's ML only season. Well, back to the woods fer...

How do you soften your hides?

I'm looking for a better way if ther is one. I've scraped the deer hide, stretched it, applyed hog brain, pulled the hide back and forth over an overhead beam, and worked it back and forth over the corner of a sawhorse. Not soft enough to satisfy. Does it need more of the same or can I shortcut...

    Mule Deer SUCCESS!

Yes it is! You don't have to go very far in this world to hear stories about the "bad apple" hunters. I'm happy to be able to pass along a story about the "good guys". And yes, just the sightseeing alone would have made a memorable trip without the hunting.

Irrefutable proof: lets document how effective PRBs are this fall.

September 28: One 10-point mule deer with .535 Hornady, 100 grns Goex, Lyman GPR. Patch thickness remains a mystery to me. Shot was approximately 65 yards. Roundball passed behind ribcage on the near side, went through the lungs, broke ribs on the far side without penatrating the skin. I don't...

    Mule Deer SUCCESS!

Hello fellow hunters! It's been 3 weeks since I returned from my solo New Mexico ML mulie hunt. I've just now had the opportunity to give a summary for you. It went as follows: After a serpentine drive that included the Palo Duro Canyon, Kit Carson's home, Taos Pueblo, and the spectacular Rio...

    Drew NM mulie tag

Correct. Traditional ML's with open sights only. In this particular unit, there is also an antler restriction: a buck must have three or more points on at least one antler. Antler restrictions vary among units though.

    Drew NM mulie tag

Thanks for valuable input, guys :hatsoff:

    Drew NM mulie tag

I just drew a nonresident New Mexico unit 9 mule deer/ restricted muzzleloader tag....somewhat inadvertantly. I know unit 9 was neither of my first two choices, and I thought I had a different 3rd choice, but I guess I may have accidently wrote down the wrong hunt code. Nevertheless, I'm...
