    Thoughts on stock finish oils

Jim Chambers oil would be a good choice. I have tried them all over the past 40 years and Chambers is all I use.

    20ga load max

Depends how much right and how low. Maybe all you have to do is file the front sight to bring up point of impact and move the front sight to the right.

    most difficult

Not difficult, but tedious. Buttplates, entry thimbles, and nose caps. Solution? Early English Trade Guns and Carolina Guns!!

    Clay Smith Smootbores

Ordered an Early English Trade gun kit with a walnut stock, 42 inch 20 gauge barrel. Should have it in about 2 weeks. Really anxious about getting this one started. Talked to Clay on the phone. He is a very nice person to do business with.

    siler l&r lock

A Chambers Late Ketland Flintlock would be ok on a Hawken. Might have to round the rear of the lock plate a little.

    Clay Smith Smootbores

Thanks Ken, appreciate the information. You confirmed what my thoughts were. Seems like good stuff. Built quite a few smoothbores over the years, but always for somebody else. Fred Miller put the barrels in (always Getz when they were easy to get) one of his stocks from out in his barn. That was...

    Clay Smith Smootbores

I am interested in building either an English or French smoothbore and have been considering one of the kits that Clay Smith offers. They appear to be of good quality. Anybody have any experience with Clay's guns. I have been building muzzleloaders for over 30 years, mostly with stocks from...

    Jim Chambers Kits

Chambers kits have the best quality parts, but I prefer to work with a stock that is not pre-inletted. I have a Chambers York rifle kit and the most tedious part was getting the barrel fully inletted. I much prefer getting my stocks with the barrel fully inletted from David Keck of Knob Mountain...

    Firing Upside Down

It's a fact pardner. I don't care if you believe it or not. Try it some time. Can of powder on a black vehicle in 90 plus degrees in the sun.

    Firing Upside Down

Ya, maybe going overboard, but there was an incident at a range I shot at in Virginia Beach, where a closed can of powder exploded as it sat on the hood of a guys dark colored pickup truck. I just like to be careful around black powder, but I still get told it is unsafe to blow down a barrel...

    Firing Upside Down

There is a can of black powder on the bench which is a firing position on the firing line. The shooter is standing next to the bench firing his flintlock. That would get you kicked off the range here and any other place that I have shot in my 21 years of travel with the Navy. Any powder...
