    Question about first deer hunt

My two cents of advice. Deer do not like to travel in wide open clear areas. If you pick a spot over looking an area that will give you good long distanced, clear shots, you will not see hardly anything. My "honey hole" for years is at the bottom of a slow sloping hill. I can see 200 yards...

the importance of target practice for hunting

This reminds me of my brother in law. He only shoots his scoped .22-250 at deer. He doesn't put it on paper, or shoot stumps, or anything else between deer seasons. I however, shoot my hunting rifles as often as I can prior to aiming at Bambi. He always asks me "Didn't you do that last...

    Renegade .54 range report

That is on my agenda, and will happen prior to the season starting. Just haven't had a chance yet. Only had a couple of hours to get that quick sight in done. Still need to get a bottle of 777 and compare to Pryodex RS , then go from there.

    Renegade .54 range report

Thanks Billin, For range use, you absolutely need some kind of shoulder padding. Shooting 1 or at the most 2 rounds per day hunting, one would not notice the pain from almost any load. 20, 30 , 40 shots at the range...owie..... The TC load charts mention that 120 grains of powder is the max...

    Renegade .54 range report

Yup. Without spending more time at a real range, with different powder types, and bullet types, and charges, and patch materials, and a steady rest, and new eyes, and calmer nerves, and a robotic shoulder....this is about as good as I am going to get. Actually measured it and the outside...

    Renegade .54 range report

It already is addictive. Something I didn't pay much attention to though while shooting is that when I started the ball with the wood and brass starter from Walmart, it made a clean circle indent into the lead ball. I am guessing that the starter was made for a .50 and that I should get a...

    Renegade .54 range report

The day after and my shoulder reminds me I was shooting yesterday. I will get used to it after awhile, but for now, it thumps me using 75 grains of Pyrodex.

    Renegade .54 range report

Finally had everything I needed to get some lead down range. Went to the 20 acres of land I own and measured out 25 yards and got setup. Also spooked 2 deer while I was getting setup, I will be back for them soon. 230 grain .530 patched round ball. Pyrodex powder. First shot using 50 grains...

    Hello from Oklahoma

Hello. I have never actually shot a black powder rifle, but have wanted to for a long time. Went to the local gun shop and asked for what they had in a used model. They pointed to a column on the wall and they all appeared to be bolt action, inline style rifles. I kept scanning and way at...
