    Flint knapping?

Mr. Brady, Has anyone tried using a properly shaped piece of your local Agate in a flintlock ? Thompson Center sold cut Agate rocks for use in their locks, back in the day. I’ve been told there are German Agate “ flints” that perform very well. I believe Agate must be shaped using something...

    Joann's - what am I doing wrong ?

JoAnn’s website says the Drill cloth cannot be shipped. Seems odd, but that’s what I saw when I tried to order it directly after finding none at two ( reasonably) local stores.

    Maybe better patch lube option?

Pushing fouling onto the breech face or into the ignition chamber (patent breech) of a rifle is usually caused by using a jag/ wiping patch combination that’s too thick. Resolve the problem by choosing a thinner material or reducing the diameter of the jag. Best way I’ve found to do that is to...

    Flints

Excellent points. Polishing the foot of the frizzen and the face of the frizzen spring without removing metal is as far as I go on mine. I also apply a little gun grease in that contact area as well. I don’t know the force required, but the movement is smooooth….😊

    Flints

As prices for flints have risen so dramatically in recent years, I explored options to simply knapping off bits as needed in an effort to get more shots from each flint. I found that inexpensive Diamond hand files work better towards that goal than any knapping tools or techniques I have used...

    Blue balls

Blue lead roundballs are simply an indication that your metal is hotter than necessary. No harm no foul. When I started casting bullets, helping my Father, Eisenhower was President. I wouldn’t cast anything without a thermometer monitoring the temperature of the metal in my pot. Compared to...

    Barrel shopping

If you ever find that you want the “ feel” of a heavier barrel for that stability folks talk about you can always slide a length of steel rod into the ramrod channel. Use as much or little as you wish to see if the added weight helps you hold better or just wears you out. If you start out with a...

    Barrel shopping

I have a 40 cal SMR with a Rice 42 inch B wt barrel. Off a rest, shoots like a laser. Offhand, heavier than I would like. There’s no way on earth I would want the same barrel to be 2 inches longer.

Fiber optic front bead and rear blank for a Lyman GPR

Thank you for that link. I just put Williams “ Fire sights “ on a T/C barrel to help me to be able to distinguish a sight picture. Typical primitive sights just look like a blur after my lens implants were done. Still struggling with vision issues but the Firesights definitely help. As someone...

    Teflon patches

For its intended purpose, to achieve the highest level of precision possible ( tightest groups) it absolutely works. Yes, every shot requires wiping the bore before loading the next shot and even that is not as simple as spitting on a piece of fabric cut out of an old T-shirt and calling it...

    WANTED T/C Firesights

Thanks, I ordered a set from Ox-Yoke for the TC barrel.

    WANTED T/C Firesights

Appreciate that. I can’t do anything anymore with my totally traditional flintlock longrifles but if firesights work for me on a T/C Hawken style rifle, I might have to revise my thinking.

    WANTED T/C Firesights

Thanks for those links. Before I go that way, I’d prefer to see if anyone has the original T/C Firesights sitting on a shelf. If not, I’ll be ordering one of the aftermarket sets.

    WANTED T/C Firesights

Had cataract surgery . 74 years old. The only sights I can see at all anymore are the T/C Firesights on a buddy’s T/C Hawken style rifle. The rear sight is marked “ Thompson Center”. Green rear, red front. I understand they are no longer offered by T/C . I’d like to find a set for my T/C...
