    Ram Rod Tips?

mark, i don't think it would effect the epoxy/ wood bond per se, and the pin would be the strength agent to the other side of the bond--epoxy to brass. if that second bond failed the epoxy would still perform as bedding and thereby still make for a tight fit. this bedding and the pin should...

    curious about firestarting...

mike, thanks for the thoughts on skatagan(tinder fungus). it does perform differently than charcloth, but with practice one can get a spark to take in one to several strikes. i have found that it takes a very little 'flip' of the wrist to do it and have much more control over where the spark...

    loading prb with cleaning jag

huntman, i agree with you that simple is good. there are many ways to skin a cat. short starter vs. coning is not the complete set of options here. i use the handle of the knife i am using to cut the patch to push down and 'set' the ball and patch in the end of the barrel just before i cut...

left handed shooter - right handed flintlock?

the best shooter i know shoots a right-hand rifle left-handed. that being said, there is more than the side a lock is on that makes right and left rifles different. cast off and cheekpiece mainly. as a lefty in a right-handed world i really enjoy not compensating and having a rifle that fits...

    Save my hide?

the hide may still be o.k., but living in minnesota you missed a real oppurtunity when you put it away last winter. next time you should think about stretching that hide on a frame and freezing it. hides that are stretched and frozen can then be nicely scraped while frozen. i do it all the...

Flintlock Muzzleloader Ball and Patch question

go with the larger size since you want to be sure and have the ball covered all the way around the bore. it is win-win with the larger patch. welcome to flintlocks. use the folks on this forum for guidance and you might just still be doing this decades from now. take care, daniel

    water proof tinder

sounds very interesting. the closest thing i have used for 'waterproof' tinder is skatagan (tinder fungus)for catching the spark and shredded birchbark to get the flame. if you throw burning bark into water it will continue to burn. have fun, and take care, daniel

pipe bowls that are not catlinite

when breakup comes i'll be getting up that way and pick some up--been meaning to anyway. it was an outcrop on the shore of silver lake--very ancient country with stone tools near by that date 13,000 b.p. there was a dam break several years ago and the shoreline has changed, but i think i can...

pipe bowls that are not catlinite

up in my neck of the woods we have deposits of a black pipestone. it seems somewhat harder than the soapstone i am familiar with, but when it is well soaked it carves quite readily with knives and files and dills. take care, daniel

    Must one stain maple?

if those modern varnishes are polyeurethane-based they will yellow very quickly--1-2 years. linseed can be quite amber and looks delightful on the right piece of figured rock maple, but don't forget that linseed does oxidize and blacken over time--in this case a long time. tung oil isvery...

    Bone Tinder Tube

hey mike, just a thought--you might try swabbing the inside with some spruce gum (heat tempered)as a filler/sealer for the porosity problem. take care, daniel p.s. have softened one end of your canoe awl to act as a mesh straightener on the shoes i am currently weaving. the cranking movement...

    Barrel pins

i've been removing the pins about twice a week for the last five years and have had no problems. just recently i had to give them a very slight bend to snug them up a bit, but have never had one fall out on its own. someday may install tiny wedges, but when i made her i did not like the...
