    Green Mountain barrel question

If its a drop-in, sell it, you'll have lots of buyers. If it isn't...ehhhhh, I kinda cringe at messing with something that works as it should. I had a TC re-bored from .50 to .54, and as well as it shoots, I still regret it.

    New favorite toy

That's a fine looking weapon. Out of curiosity, why did you want it to look shortened like it'd suffered a burst barrel? That is not a criticism, just wondering if its an idea you had yourself or if it was based on some event, historical weapon, myth, etc.

    Why we believe..

I think there's an identity aspect to it. People like me, or the kind of people I like, believe X, so I adhere to it. Or, and I think this is even more common, those people (whom I really dislike and in truth find contemptuous), believe Y, so I'm going to believe something else- preferably...

    LMF Brown/BC Plum Brown Request

Thanks guys. I've been able to find a few more pics. I'm kind of torn between an antique gray (French gray?)or brown finish on a project I'm thinking about doing this summer. I think I'm just going to have to wait and see how red the stock is. I hadn't been much on the gray finish before...

    Curious about Ballistol

I love prime. I'm sure a lot of people don't get their money's worth from it, but I sure do. Speaking of which, I just looked liquid Ballistol up on Amazon, and its Prime qualified, which means free two day shipping, which means it almost certainly isn't a haz/mat item. mtmanjim, I think you...

    Curious about Ballistol

I've ordered it several times in the past, almost certainly at least once from midway (piggybacked on orders for something else), and I can almost promise there were no shipping/handling restrictions. I would have waited to find it locally if there had been.

    LMF Brown/BC Plum Brown Request

I'm thinking about redoing some metal parts on a project, maybe a whole rifle, and was hoping to see some good pictures of the finish these two items create. Most (okay, pretty much all) of the results I get running a search focus on the weapon as a whole, but don't really give you much focus...

Left hand replacement lock for GPR

Mine isn't terrible. It sparks, I'm not plagued with flashes in the pan, but it does seem to chew up flints a bit, and I suspect (though I have little to compare it to)the lock speed could be a hair faster. I'm just interested in seeing if it could be better. If it is, I think I'll buy a .54...

    easy question?

For what its worth, at longer distances, I think you'll have to do a lot of trial and error regardless of what data you've got. A patched round ball has a ballistic coefficient only slightly better than that of a thrown cinder block. Once you get past 100-125yds, its bleeding velocity so fast...

    easy question?

My experience is that published load data velocities, be it with modern cartridges or blackpowder/substitutes, are often....lets call it "aspirational". There are so many factors that go into velocity- barrel length, patch thickness and lubricant, roughness of the bore- that there really is no...

Advice on what gun to buy

Like was stated above, Lyman uses some sort of bombproof preservative on the barrel, and it won't shoot well until that manure is all gone. Break cleaner, a osso nylon bristle brush, and a lot of patches did it for me. If I were to do it again (I'm thinking about adding a GPR caplock to the...

Advice on what gun to buy

Not obtuse at all. I didn't know what it was 10 years ago. The vent is the hole on the side of the barrel that allows the spark/flash from the lock/pan to flash over to ignite the main charge. The vent can/does erode over time, and many flintlocks have a screw-in liner. Its sort of like a...

Advice on what gun to buy

Run a search in the flintlock section, most people seem to be very happy with them once the vent liner is replaced ($5 part). Which isn't to say there isn't room for improvement. Mine was my first flintlock, and I've been very happy with it. I'm thinking about upgrading the lock, but its me...

Advice on what gun to buy

Lyman makes a solid rifle. Swap out the vent liner with one from RCM and you are ready for the races. I don't know how true that is for other factory guns. Still, it isn't going to be the same quality of a custom or semi-custom rifle.

Advice on what gun to buy

What kind of battle- army or civilian? The Brown Bess was used by just about everyone at some point and to some degree, militia, civilian, and army, for nearly 100 years. It was a smoothbore, not a rifle, but it probably saw more action in North America than anything else in that period...
