Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair

We are Blue Cat Buttonworks - normally set up by the fort wall opposite the fort gate.

    Fort Fredrick Market Fair- Maryland

Mrs Coot & I will be set up by the fort. Look for the sign of the Blue Cat. If we could only do one event a year, it would be Fort Fred. Sadly several of our friends have aged out.

    Early Gunsmiths in the Colonies

A number of early colonists were the 2nd or 3rd sons of the wealthy. The first son would inherit the fathers lands with the result that large estates were kept intact and land was seldom available for sale. Sending the "extra" sons over here with cash in hand would allow them to buy goodly...

John S. Brooks Muzzleloader information requested- unit cleanout

You should check sites that specialize in selling muzzleloaders. Track of the Wolf and Clay Smith Guns are two that I have dealt with & seeing what they have for sale & the prices will help you get a better feel for the market.

Anybody ever get a Daguerreotype/tintype/Ambrotype of themselves?

Mrs Coot & I had a tintype done of the two of us. This was possibly 30 years ago at the Smithsonian in DC where they had a special exhibit on early photography. They even had costumes that you could wear for the picture. The tintype now hangs on our family photos wall - we have become our own...

The Search for a Vintage Cornbread

Cornmeal (ground or pounded dry corn), some salt & just enough water to make into a patty (not a batter). Cook on a piece of sheet metal (a hoe blade is one option) over a low fire. Very filling. Tasty - not particularly great but not bad either. Did I mention filling ...... Eggs, butter...

    Drying your tent?

Has anyone seen the Binford 2000 tent dryer? It combines a leaf blower & 20# propane tank .....................

    My blunderbuss options

I have read the article and have questions re the stated conclusions. The test barrels were all the same overall length. The result is that the unflaired barrel is a full length cylinder bore, while the flared barrels were only cylinder bored for a fraction of their length and then larger bore...

Sabot vs ball and load work up

FFF black powder will work fine for prime & main charge in most rifles. FF seems to do better in many shotguns where the slower "push" gives better patterns. The old Dixie Gun Works catalogs would advise to start with a load equal to the caliber (.50 cal = 50 grains) & go up & down in 5...

    Juried Rendezvous

So going to church or a fancy wedding where everyone else is dressed up & someone shows up in cut-offs & a tee does not impact the experience for the others? It is a way of saying that I don't care or that I don't think your event is worth my bothering to meet standards. It leads to others...

    17th and 18th century books?

Mrs Coot has a very good repro Bible. She got it from a guy that specialized in them. Try a search & he may come up. Back "in the day", if you had one book, it was likely a Bible. The well to do frequently had more to choose from.

    Juried Rendezvous

Why were period concerts so long? Because the musicians spent half the time retuning their gut string instruments. The other half of the concert, they just played out of tune.

    Juried Rendezvous

The entire reason for many of these events is to (briefly) step away from the current/modern era. This is very hard to do when there are too many farby outfits. Ren-fairs are for fantasy, Rondys are for pre 1840 & juried events are time/place specific. There are those who have been "newbys" for...
