What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Busy weekend with the NC 4-H Shooting Sports Tournament. Had about 300 youth shooting everything from air rifle/pistol to archery to ML. I get to look after the muzzle loaders, had about 60 shooters. Beautiful day, lots of smoke

    Just picked up this rifle

Just bought this rifle, not real sure what to call it. Was told it was built by Jack Vance, no dates. The rifle has a Douglas 45 cal barrel, set up as a target rifle, probably bench gun. It weighs 11.5 lbs, barrel is ~44", total length 60". Lock has Russ Hamm on inside plate, with 26 below the...

    muzzleloading 'fireworks' ?

A good charge of BP with a prodex pellet seated on top makes a pretty good flash, just need to watch the fallout zone. The pellet may travel a ways. That is the only use I have for those pellets. BP by it self needs a over powder patch

    Youth and Muzzle Loaders

Great. MO has some great shooters. That team is one we always look toward with careful eyes, they were on top for years.

    Youth and Muzzle Loaders

You are correct, 4-H has its own training system. The reason is we are training leaders/instructors in youth development as well as a shooting sports discipline. TO be honest, much of the material for the shooting part is very similar to the NRA, which is what BSA uses, but we spend a lot of...

    Youth and Muzzle Loaders

Check with your local Cooperative Extension office. 4-H is part of that system through the land grant university system. Every county and state is a little different, some have the shooting sports program and some don't. If they don't, think about becoming a leader/instructor and get the...

    Youth and Muzzle Loaders

I’m in Grand Island NE for the 4-H National Shooting Sports tournament this week. We have about 600 youth from 32 states competing in 9 different disciplines, including 46 in muzzle loading. ML shoots 50 yd bullseye, 25 yd bottles and critters novelty targets and silhouettes. My NC team placed...

Totally new to all of this

I live west of you in Ashe County, near West Jefferson. If you are planning a mountain anytime, maybe we could meet and I can help figure out what you have and help you get started on the road to black powder addiction. And if yours is not shootable, I have several that are, just to let you see...

    Taking a Blacksmithing class

Another possible anvil base is 3 tire rims welded together. Pick them so they are the right height. Fairly solid, maybe not as good as a wood block, but since they are round, you can tilt the anvil and roll it on concrete or a packed surface. Yes, fasten the anvil to the base with some type of...

    marking ramrod,,,,,,,,,,

4-H rules. That injury potential if a wooden rod breaks and goes through a hand.

    marking ramrod,,,,,,,,,,

Working with 4-H youth, we mark the range rod with tape at unloaded. We can't use wooden rods, and have a 60 grain max load, so if it is not unloaded there is about an inch space for a loaded round and 1/2" for a dry ball. We also only shoot round balls. Colored tape makes it easy for the RO to...
