    Don Stith Full Stock

Beautiful fitting and filing work, Fred. Makes mine look very apprentice-oid. Clay

    Don Stith Full Stock

Whoops, Wulf- You're right. Somebody pointed that out to me right after I built it and I forgot to change it! (I was already into the next rifle...and then there was the one after that. If I keep building guns, I'm going to lose my standing as a liberal!) Clay San Jose

    Don Stith Full Stock

I agree. Did one of Don Stith's kits- a Gemmer Hawken half-stock- about three years ago. Excellent quality parts, good wood, and very good feed-back. Pretty plain is about right for Hawken wood, I think. Too fancy wouldn't look right! Clay San Jose

    soldering under rib

You can also blue the flats on either side. Solder won't stick to the bluing. After soldering, you can use Naval Jelly and steel wool to remove the bluing. Clay San Jose CA

    Kendal Underhammer info ...

I hear you, Davy. My machining skills are about at the same level. Here's a good reference on the Kimball and Hilliard locks: http://underhammers.blogspot.com/2008/04/hilliard-target-rifle.html . Apparently they lived close to each other and Hilliard bought out Kimball's shop when the latter...

    Kendal Underhammer info ...

Hey, Davy- To show you how twisted it all can get, I've been thinking about combining the external spring of the Wood or Cook locks with the separate spring-loaded sear and adjustable trigger of the Gorning lock (from Ned Roberts "The Muzzle-Loading Caplock Rifle")...to be used against a...

    Kendal Underhammer info ...

Almost all your questions are answered in Jeff Baron's neat little book "The Underhammer Rifle", which gives detailed instruction on building six different locks, including a Hilliard, which is a kissing cousin to your Kendal. Also gives complete instructions on metals choices and heat...

    Tow Ohio halfstock

I haven't built the TOW Ohio, but I'm working on my second Pecatonica River Ohio rifle right now. They should be pretty similar. I really like the look and feel of them and the balance is great. The first, with a cherry stock, was just my attempt at restocking an old CVA Kentucky rifle (.45...

    Cap Box Lid Spring Placement

Does the spring press up on the back of the lid pivot block to keep the box *closed* or on the underside of the lid forward of the pivot to keep it open? Thanks, Clay

    Cap Box Lid Spring Placement

Hi, Paul- This project is another in the series of my self-education process in rifle-building and actually starts with an older ordered-by-mistake plain maple Ohio stock. A little coverage by a cap box will not hurt at all and I actually like the look of the Ohio/Plains boxes. I know the...

    Cap Box Lid Spring Placement

Hi, Guys- I know it's been discussed before, but I can't find the reference using the search engine and I need to know how to shape the cam under a plains style capbox lid and how to position the spring. Any help? Do I recall correctly that no lid catch spring is needed? I'm building a...

Home Study Course- CVA to Ohio

Thanks, guys. I appreciate it. Took her out shooting today to see if it all worked. Tooled up into the mountains to the range, set up all my gear carefully, laid out the powder, my make-shift flask (broke the spring and lost the spout a few weeks ago), set up the patches and range rod, clamped...

Home Study Course- CVA to Ohio

About thirty years ago, I built a series of three CVA kit guns. Sold the .32 cal squirrel gun a year or two back and mounted the .45 cal Kentucky pistol in a case with my old, fancy and now un-used pipes. That left the .45 cal Kentucky rifle to deal with. Not a very special design, as you all...

Your hc/pc Hawkens and photos, please.

Here's mine- It's a Gemmer Hawken, made from Don Stith's special parts set, in 50 cal. Turned out pretty good, considering it was my first project in black powder in about twenty years! Clay

    hooked breech

Don't think you can get there from here. I researched that a few months ago and found that the only 13/16" hooked breech was the English square style, which would have to be filed round to make a snail. The other filing alternative was the Hawken 15/16" plug filed down on all the flats and tang...
