    a short happy-sad trek

I agree with JonnyReb--I felt like I'd just started to tuck into a well-written book. Spence, I know I'd be a grateful reader of any story you might choose to write on these woody subjects! Thank you!

My new Pedersoli flintlock--but what model?

You're absolutely right. I should make it my own. I've already started polishing. I don't know if it's German silver, silver-plated, or solid silver. (Alden, I wouldn't know about the smell--damaged that sense in Iraq) I guess it doesn't matter. I'm really happy with it.

My new Pedersoli flintlock--but what model?

I guess the consensus is Kentucky. I really like it either way. I'll definitely look into pinning that ramrod, since it only has two crimps holding the tip. Also, on your advice, I took off the small plate under the stock. I scratched a small area on the back of it with a putty knife, and it...

My new Pedersoli flintlock--but what model?

I bought this .50 Pedersoli flintlock last week from the Blunderbuss gun store in Denver. The owner said this is a Pedersoli Pennsylvania, but now that it's home and under better light, it looks closer to a Kentucky to me. 35-1/2" barrel. I'm not able to positively ID the gun because a.) I don't...

    All worked up

I'm with you! I'm so excited I can barely keep a thought in my head! Unfortunately, I can't leave until Friday afternoon because of work. But I have the bags packed, and the rifle zeroed. I really want to be up there, rather than down here!

    Minimum elk charge for .58PRB?

At the range over the weekend, I had interesting results with the new .58 bore on the Pedersoli RMH. I don't have pictures of the groups yet, but will do my best to describe the process. Starting the day, I shot the first three groups (85gr, 95gr and 105gr) with the Goex 2Fg I had in my horn...

    Minimum elk charge for .58PRB?

What were the military loads for a .58? I told Mr. Hoyt I wanted a roundball shooter when he did the rebore. He made it 1:60 twist with deep, semi-rounded rifling. Yeah, I don't know what it is that has me excited about taking an elk with a roundball. I have another rifle that shoots .50...

    Minimum elk charge for .58PRB?

True. I'm planning to start at 85gr, as you recommended. It is nice to hear where others have settled for an elk load with this caliber, too. Part of the equation is trajectory, right? But the other part is effect-on-target. I want to make sure I settle on a load that will have enough energy at...

    Minimum elk charge for .58PRB?

Yes, the RMH has lost quite a noticeable amount of weight. I should have weighed it before and after the rebore, but didn't. It's much more comfortable to carry around now than it was as a .50cal! I did not know that the stocks on these traditional weapons were designed to fit against the high...

    Minimum elk charge for .58PRB?

Wow, I'm glad I asked! Much different than my .50--I probably would've started WAY too low! Thanks!

    Minimum elk charge for .58PRB?

I'll be headed to the range next weekend to start working up my elk load for next month. I just got my Pedersoli RMH back from Bob Hoyt, rebored to .58cal. It has a 32in barrel, and my maximum range limit will be 100yds. I'll be shooting .570 round ball, only. I don't want to start too low on...

    When to cock?

Perfect. This all might seem obvious to the experienced muzzleloader hunters here, but gold for a new guy. Cheers.

    When to cock?

This is a great solution, I think. Cap is less than an inch away from the nipple, and easily manipulated. Perfect for still-hunting elk, where shots present themselves quickly, and often while you're moving. Thank you!

    When to cock?

I'm worried about all of the things! This is just one that I could ask the forum about. Minutia, sure, but in the aggregate it all becomes important.

    When to cock?

Ah, I never thought of that! Perfect, I'll practice that. Thanks, Brown Bear! I'm glad I asked.
