    1858 Remington - 1st C & B

My load is 30 grains of pyrodex p or GOEX whichever I have on hand. I use a .454 lead balls and either use wonder wad type over the powder or grease as others say. Easiest thing is to get a tub of cheap margarine. A plastic butter knife does quite a good job IMO. Happy shooting.

    Fired New Pistol

Nice! Don't have one of those yet. Might have to get one. Be safe and keep it up...

1851 Confederate Navy .44 - Brass Frame and loads??

Agreed with the above. Stay away from 40. I got just about every revolver and have loaded 40 only once. Yes it kicked like a SOB in my 1858 STEEL rem, but not worth the wasted powder and the extra recoil. 25 is max in a brassie. I shoot 30 standard in all of my steel 44s.

    yall made me do it

I have heard great things about those particular kits. Seem like they are fairly easy to create a decent shooting rifle. Have fun and excercise your right to bear!

    So... I REALLY want one!

My recommendation is to get a Rem. Colts are fine, but IMO rems are easier for a beginner no wedge pin and stuff to deal with. Also I always tell people, find someone to go with to help you along. Have them show you how to load, shoot and clean it. This will ensure you don't make the same...

    Muzzleloaders by Investarms

Hmmm I can't imagine a properly loaded barrel with 70 grains of powder not being as loud as a 22. Heck 30 in my revolvers is pretty darn loud. I typically shoot about 75 grains in my hawken when at the range. I hunt with the same load. It performs great and will drop a deer at a reasonable...

    Paper Cartridges

Awesome pictures. Thanks for the detail! I got into the paper cartridge phase about 5 years ago. Had too many hangfires. Did a different system then this so this might be better. I decided that the time it took me to make the cartridges equaled or exceeded the time it took to load at the...

    It's a disease!

No cure that I know of. You will slow down as time goes on. I still have a list of 50 or more that I want, but I have decided that I already have more then I can shoot, so I now try for one every 3 years or so.

    Cause of misfire?

I agree with the assessments about cleaning near the breech. I have seen issues with oil or grease causing a blockage to the cap. Usually this is the cause of my problems. Shooting my 1861 rep on hot summer day and some of the wax/grease from the minnie was somehow blocking the ignition...

new guy, what do i need?

My best advice brother is to find a good friend who has experience. This person will show you the basics and teach you all of the things NOT to do. Wish I was that smart when I started!

Wads vs. Lube in cap-n-ball? Beginner!

I think you have to try for yourself and weigh the costs of the wads or the pain of grease everywhere. I have used both and it seems like it depends on my mood. If I feel lazy then the wads are in. If not I use grease. Sounds like if you have time to make them the grease pills might also...

    Birds 1st C&Bs

Nice. Bought my brother one for a special occasion. He likes it they shoot nice. I don't like the short barrel or the short loading lever, but it ain't my gun! Important thing is that you have a couple of new toys...

    Colt Frequent Jams

Yep have had similar problems with my colt. As others said pinch the caps or use #10's. When this happens to me. I usually get mad, then calm down. Disassemble the thing and then fire again. This is the reason I favor remingtons. That and the main spring on the colts is a bit whimpy for my...

1858 New Army Target .44 Caliber Revolver

Yeah don't make the mistakes I did. Go to the range with someone who knows what they are doing you can read books till you are blue in the face. I know I did, but you just can't replicate experience. I had a terrible time keeping the powder dry and had some nasty problems with lead balls...
