What should I get, and realistic expectations?

Eh, already have plenty of rifles and have killed several deer with round ball. The round ball question is more of an afterthought.

What should I get, and realistic expectations?

Can you tell me a little more? What kind of leather do you punch the wads out of? What diameter? As for shot, you just have a measured amount of shot twisted up in 3 sheets of newspaper and ram it down the barrel after the wads? No over shot wad?

What should I get, and realistic expectations?

I think I am ready to find a percussion SxS in 12 or 10 gauge for hunting. I hunt about everything you can with a shotgun, but a lot of this will be for rabbit, jackrabbit, ducks, and geese. I plan to use bismuth shot for waterfowl unless someone tells me this is a problem. So a few questions...

    Roundball Expansion?

I generally hunt deer with 54 and 58 round ball. I don't really care if the ball expands when it hits. I have only recovered one ball, a 54 that hit a deer at 60 yards or so. The ball hit the deer in the right thigh, broke the thigh bone and lodged in the left shoulder. One side of the ball...

    New Englander

Looks real nice. Maybe try a round ball if it kicks. I bought a roached barrel 54 New Englander with a synthetic stock and sent it to Bobby Hoyt for the works. I ended up with a nice 58 in round ball twist. It was a little finicky for ignition until I switched to musket caps. No ignition...

Priming Horn and Small Tin Containers

I found a little round pewter tin in a lot of junk pewter I bought. The tin is the perfect size to hold prelubed patches. I really like the idea of bluing something small like this to get some practice before I tackle the rifle kit waiting for me. Will have to find a little tin to work with.

TC 58 CAL MAXI HUNTER MOULD ?

Considering what a 58 round ball does to a deer, I wonder why anyone would feel the need for a hunter conical.

Sights for a TC New Englander?

Ha, appreciate it, but have no idea whether they would fit.

Sights for a TC New Englander?

Where do you find sights that will fit a TC New Englander? Looks like Williams used to make a fiber optic firesight set, but they seem to be out of stock everywhere.

    PC Bullets

    Do you lube them?
  11. B

    PC Bullets

I don't think there is an advantage for BP bullets. In cartridge firearms, PC works well because it provides a slick coating to the bullet that would otherwise require bullet lube. In BP, the lube also serves to soften up the fouling. Using PC doesn't do that.

Where do you draw the line?

While I respect those that strive for period correct, it isn't my deal at present. I came to muzzleloaders as a hunter, although I started (and stayed with) percussion cap sidelocks. I shoot to please myself or at deer, so my lack of interest in PC accoutrements doesn't matter (well, maybe the...

    Musket caps

Yeah, bought plenty of musket caps for my needs before things got tight. Just marvelling at prices.
