    Wooden utensles

Vegetable oil goes rancid after a time-so no. Linseed oil takes a long time to dry-so maybe not. Modern BLO has certain chemicals in it that can be harmful-so no. Not sure about Tung oil. Depending on the wood untreated can take on odors and tastes.

Cabela's not shipping bp guns anymore?

I think the meaning is that the gun owners are convincing the anti gunners that the only thing needed is to pass laws to get rid of firearms and the gun owners will go along with it? Would the anti gunners back off if gun owners convinced them that outlawing guns would create a class of new...

    Patch knife making

You don't need to worry about the temper towards the butt of the tang. Ease up when you get near the blade, but a little blue near the blade edge is OK as tougher in that area doesn't hurt. Make sure to round the inside corners. Use a concrete bit to cut holes in the tang. Or you can buy one of...

    Question for Blacksmith/metallurgy folks

If you are planning on doing a lot of forging, google solid fuel forges, specifically a JBOD (just a box of dirt) designed by Charles Stevens. If you are frugal, it shouldn't cost you any more than a MAPP torch set up. And it will be cheaper to operate and will work better. I think you will need...

    Fur Trade Era Knife Sheaths

Do you consider a saddle stitch to be appropriate? Also, would that material hanging outside the sheath be a broken loop that had been used to help draw the knife from the sheath?

    Old Hickory Knife rework

The blade profile is close to the ones used on the continent (N. America) for the last several hundred years, with the exception of the hammer marks. Be more specific on the time frame. The large rivets are out and small pins are in. A partial tang would be appropriate for an earlier knife. If...

    Coeur d'Alene Idaho Muzzleloading/Craft Show

This weekend, Saturday & Sunday, @ 9am each day. I've always had a enjoyable time. This is the 24th annual show. Friends of Spokane House (FOSH) will most likely have a couple of tables there and an old time American Mountain Man (AMM) is usually in attendance.

Looking for a good book about knives

Google Scavengeology. Check out their research links. There are some about early French knives and axes. Might be a bit earlier than you are interested in. Although, I don't think much had changed. Scott- you beat me to it.

    How to "slug the bore"

Do this with a nut a couple of washers that are just a hair undersized and a couple of tight fitting wads with a washer and nut to hold them on the end of the bolt. Insert into bore-pour some cerrosafe in and let it set for @ 30 minutes. Measure after another 30 minutes.

    Fire Hardening?

In the old days they probably used hide glue-really strong but it can dry out after a time. And moisture will weaken it. Modern wood glue-titebond III or equivalent.

    OFF HAND SHOOTING

It is an unmentionable with fine mechanical adjustments on the stock that adjust for pretty much everything. Offset, cant, lop, drop, grip, forearm height, comb, and maybe some other stuff I don't recall. In the old days, the stock maker would carve these adjustments in or the owner would glue...

    OFF HAND SHOOTING

Nothing wrong with a generic rifle, if it fits you. A good shot with a generic rifle that is a poor fit will rarely beat a good shot with a generic rifle that is a good fit. Simple but true. And we are discussing 'offhand', not any of the positions. Shooting from a rest is a great equalizer for...

    OFF HAND SHOOTING

excess650 gave some good advice about closing your eyes, positioning the gun and opening your eyes. I tried this with a Hawken I have and when I opened my eyes, I was a good 15 degrees below the target! I tried moving my rear foot back, but I'd been in kneeling position before I was on target...

    OFF HAND SHOOTING

Once a person has a properly fitted gun, then they can follow the advice given previously to shoot to the best that they can.

    OFF HAND SHOOTING

I believe the first thing a person needs for offhand shooting is a gun that fits properly.
