    Flattening a priming horn

I took my first shot at making a flat priming horn last night and it didn’t work out. I heated my vegetable oil to 330 degrees and dunked it for a few seconds at a time until it was soft, but some deep blisters popped up and ruined the horn. Did I heat it too quickly/overheat it or does...

Prices on used guns are insanely high.

Sidney hit the nail on the head. Unless you’re looking for something rare and you’re knowledgeable enough to avoid getting scammed, gun shows are a ripoff. The only fair deals are to be found are online or private party sales through forums, arms list, gun broker etc. And don’t even get me...

Can swabbing between shots encourage misfires?

Hm. I like y’all’s recommendation to swab half or most of the bore then flip the patch and swab the full length. If I use a wet patch, I’ve either slightly dampened a cleaning patch with spit or used a scrap of greased patch material and follow with a dry patch.

Can swabbing between shots encourage misfires?

I recently noticed the fouling in the pan of my flintlock is just a bit moist. It always does that, but I just now started really thinking about it. If your fouling is moist from patch lube and you swab between every shot or every few shots, the fouling that doesn’t stick to the patch ends up...

    Friendship, Ind.

I plan to be there but I haven’t been since I was a kid. Since I’m not a registered vendor, would I get dirty looks if I walk around with a for sale sign on my rifle?

Are round balls going the way of caps, etc?

Track of the Wolf usually has a decent selection of cast balls, but the factory swaged balls have spotty availability. Also, if you’re thinking about a .36 squirrel gun, 000 buck shot is .350” and can be used in a .36 rifle. But to answer your question, in my opinion, casting your own is the...

Planned to build a Kibler but couldn’t pass this up.

Hmm. I’ll keep that in mind. I was just gona rub it down with boiled linseed oil every now and again.

Well I appreciate the complement, I do love my little gun room. I built it primarily as a reloading bench but I use it for pictures and for light projects too. The dirty work of gun cleaning, stock refinishing, leather work, powder horns etc is done on a smaller bench on the other side of the...

Well then YOU’D feel guilty for indulging in instant gratification. While I appreciate the offer I’ll accept the consequences of my actions and leave you to enjoy your life.

Yes he does. Met him in my black powder club.

Planned to build a Kibler but couldn’t pass this up.

When people ask me when it would have been made, I’ve been saying “roughly 1760s-90s, Lancaster Pennsylvania.” They don’t know the difference but maybe I should say 1780s-1800 Virginia?

Planned to build a Kibler but couldn’t pass this up.

It’ll shoot a 3 shot group you can cover with a quarter at 25 yards so once I get more familiar with the rifle I think we’ll get along just fine. Also, when I compared to what I was going to spend on a Kibler and a few tools, I’d be a fool to pass this one up. I can build my own for my next rifle.

Planned to build a Kibler but couldn’t pass this up.

I got my hands on my first hand made rifle last week. Rice 42” swamped .50 caliber barrel, L&R lock and a modestly curly maple stock. Handles like an absolute dream and stacks ball on ball with that swamped barrel. I don’t think it’s a real close copy of any particular gunsmith’s work, but what...

What is it with curved buttstocks?

I’m no veteran flintlock longrifle shooter but in my experience, you’ll have to change your stance quite a bit to shoot one properly offhand. My background is in 50 foot small bore competition so the crescent butt plate and relatively barrel heavy balance point still throws me for a loop.

    Good price for a Pedersoli?

That’s about what I had in mind.
