    .562 Round Ball

I use .562 cast from the same double cavity Lee mold. Rifle is a flintlock with a D weight Colerain barrel. Patch is drill with spit for lube. I get 1 1/2" 50 yard groups and 3 1/2" 100 yd groups on a calm day. Loads easy enough (first round can be thumb started, subsequent rounds need a...

    grains in a .38 and .45?

There's a sticky in the General Muzzleloading forum under useful tables or some such. https://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/threads/black-powder-measures-from-cartridges.58311/

Round ball patch size and accuracy

Given the rotational velocity of the ball/patch as it leaves the muzzle, the patch will flair out immediately and not get caught on the ball. Think about the guy tossing a pizza or throwing a fishing net but on steroids.

Round ball patch size and accuracy

It’s unlikely a change in patch size will take a load from “off the paper” to “grouping nicely”. I would be more inclined to credit an improvement in your offhand shooting. Only way to know for sure is to bench the gun with both loads to remove as much of the human factor as possible.

Walnut Kibler .45cal SMR, long wait

It's been over a year so I don't remember exactly what I did other than follow the directions on the Permalyn containers. I think I did three coats of finish and three coats of sealer. I do remember that the walnut stain was REALLY dark and I was concerned I had over done it with just the first...

selecting a caliber for hunting? small game vs big game

Before making your choice, check your state game regs. They may have caliber restrictions, depending on the game being hunted.

Walnut Kibler .45cal SMR, long wait

I went with walnut, too but decided on a darker stain. Used LMF American Walnut stain and Permalyn finish and sealer.

    Hearing Protection?

My original reply (#16) said I don't use hearing protection while hunting. To amplify my response, I can't use sound blockers (plain plugs) when bird hunting as I need to hear the flush. I've tried the ear plugs that are supposed to only block loud noises, but I've found they distort the sound...

    Hearing Protection?

Between high frequency loss from flying in the Navy to shooting every week, I always wear hearing protection at the range. Only exception is when hunting.

    SAFETY WARNING

Pretty much what Scota said. Put it in a pocket or pouch. Any powder containers left on the shooting bench will eventually create a problem.

    Carrying Case - Soft

Found Unique gun cases when I was looking for something that my 46” barreled Kibler SMR would fit in. Look for their “musket” cases. The additional compartment for a range rod is a nice touch. https://uniquecases.com/product-category/musket-cases/

What do you hunt with your traditional muzzleloader?

Oregon declared them invasive awhile back. Basically no rules. I shoot mine out of the cottonwoods with a squirrel rifle.

    Barrel length question

The Kibler SMR is pretty much the definition of a squirrel rifle. Mine is the slightly older version with a 46" barrel. As others have stated the longer sight radius helps and the front sight is so far out there it subtends a smaller part of the target, making for a more precise aim. Only issue...
