Cleaning Hoppes gun oil from bore

I clean the barrel with hot soapy water after shooting, then apply a generous amount of Mobil 1 motor oil to the bore with sopping patches. Before shooting, I place a toothpick in the nipple, then dump a couple of ounces of alcohol in the barrel and let it sit for a few minutes. I then take a...

    Finished the Hawken

I don't think it's too dark. I think it looks great. Sharp looking rifle.

First shot varies...what would you do?

The alcohol may not be getting enough of it out of the metal to affect how slippery the lands and grooves are on the first shot. The first shot may be burning off what is impregnated in the metal. What kind of patch lube are you using?

    My Investarms Hawken Rifle

I would ask myself if paying someone to weld up the hole would be the same cost or more expensive than purchasing another butt plate.

First shot varies...what would you do?

What kind of lubricant are you using for rust preventative after you clean the barrel after a range session? What process do you go through to remove the rust preventative before loading the first shot of the day the next time you shoot?

    My Investarms Hawken Rifle

Welcome to the club. There are those who have drilled holes off center and those who will. I should be president of the club. I know you don't want to hear this, because you have a lot of time invested. I would be inclined to order a new butt plate. Like 44Bro suggested, I would drill the...

    Walmart CCI caps misfire

The only time I had issues with caps was when I used old caps that someone gave to me. The caps were tarnished and the tin they were packaged in was a bit weathered looking. I suspect the caps were over 20 years old and not kept in a cool dry place. There were some good suggestions made in...

    Hawken Pronunciation/spelling fun!

I have to closely watch my use of the English language in the presence of my spouse, elsewise I find myself being corrected. I advised her she missed her calling and should have sought employment as a Constable at the Department of Corrections.

    Which Powder to use?

When I first started shooting sidelock muzzleloaders a few years ago, Pyrodex RS was all I could find locally. I've fired several pounds of it using whatever caps were available, CCI, Winchester and Remington # 11 caps, through three different rifles and one handgun. I haven't needed Magnum...

    Hawken Pronunciation/spelling fun!

If we were engaging in conversation in person, I would have to pay heed to both my enunciation and pronunciation in the presence of this distinguished group of linguists.

Pedersoli Frontier .50 percussion at 25 yds

Once you are able to shoot an acceptable group at 50 yards, I suggest shooting at 100 yards before breaking out the file and working on the front sight. Shoot different loads at 100 yards until you find the one you like. If you suspect the rifle will shoot low at 100 yards, attach the target...

    FFFF

I am glad you guys are hashing out using FFFF vs FFF in the flash pan before I buy a flintlock. This will save me a little time and money. Well, maybe not money.......

Pedersoli Frontier .50 percussion at 25 yds

I've fired a bit of Triple Se7en out of my .50 caliber rifles myself and collected some chronograph data. I have been using FFG, but FFFG gives me similar accuracy, so I may stick with FFFG when all the other powder runs out. I just hunt paper, clay and steel. What do you plan to do with the...
