    No Bang on 1st Strike.

OP here. Time to seriously THANK everyone for your thoughts/experience. It has helped me a great deal, THANK YOU! I was on the verge of major regret for getting into black powder/cap and ball because I could not and still can't find percussion caps and powder online. However, thankfully...

    No Bang on 1st Strike.

"lube wad", what? I admitted to using lubed wads and someone earlier in this thread said I was going to contaminate my powder. I use lubed wads because I watched about 50 Youtube.com videos that recommended lubed wads between powder and ball. Glad to see someone else is as stupid and/or...

    No Bang on 1st Strike.

Before seeing your post I must have received your Dremel thoughts via telepathy because earlier this AM I decided to use my Dremel. I considered using a stone bit VS a cutting wheel. I chose the cutting wheel. Wow, as expected that cutting wheel got sparks-a-flyin(my files got nowhere). So...

    No Bang on 1st Strike.

I failed to mention in my original post that I had installed Slixshot nips on one of my Ubertis, the 5" 1858. I left the original nips on my 8" 1858. The #10 CCI caps do not fit, they barely start onto the nip. The #11 will fit down onto the nip but still not enough to fire with the first...

    No Bang on 1st Strike.

By the way I am using the only caps I could fi d which are CCI #10 and #11. I would like to try Remingtons but can't fi d them.

    No Bang on 1st Strike.

Yes, that is what I decided to try first before buying different nips and not knowing whst size to get. Using ideas gleaned here I have put a piece of vinyl tubing over the threads, put in my cordless drill and am lathing with a square file. So far this is very slow going with no progress so...

    No Bang on 1st Strike.

I don't think the pellet powder was an issue because they went kaboom as long as the cap fired. Getting the cap to fire is my problem but yes, contaminated powder would be a problem. By the way I am using the pellet form of powder because I could not find any granulated in stock anywhere. Thanks.

Yes, not knowing which size would work best I recently got very lucky and was able to get 300 of each size. I did try #11's too and saw no difference with them. I have seen it said Uberti recommends #11. Looking at them side by side on my desk I can't see any difference but apparently there...

Thanks for those ideas. I think I will also experiment with chamber(s) unloaded and just caps on the nipples to see if I can get more clues.

    No Bang on 1st Strike.

Took my two Uberti 1858 Remington replicas to the range. Having never fired black powder guns before I did lots of YouTube time to learn the basics. I loaded only one chamber before firing with a Pyrodex pellet, lubed wad and .454 lead ball. I used a #10 CCI cap. The first hammer strike did...

What's going on with Dixie Gunworks

I shopped for a Uberti replica of the 1858 Remington for a couple months before I found one in stock at DGW. It was also listed at the best price I had seen at #395.00. Web site declared 3-4 week shipping delay. Recently, after 4 weeks, it was on my porch. I was surprised to see it was in a...

    revolver nipples and .44 ball

This is the tubing I use per a youtube.com video with instructions on how to use small pistol primers as a substitute for #10/11 percussion caps. Don't know if #10/11's are the same diameter but probably pretty close. Everbilt 0.170 in. I.D. x 1/4 in. O.D. x 10 ft. Clear Vinyl...

    Which Black Powder

I bought both because I have seen people say my 1858 Uberti replica uses #11's and others say #10's are the ticket. I thought I better buy both since I could get my hands on them. Looking at them side by side on my desk the #10's look to be just a hair taller than the 11"s. I will test them...

CLOSED Uberti 1858 New Army Remington Revolver

Well, the first thing you see on their Web site is, "We are currently 3-4 weeks behind in processing orders......". So, I guess they are trying to be true to their word. :)
