    Left-handed Jaeger feasible?

What caliber are you interested in and barrel length? Contrary to what a lot of people believe. Jeager or Germanic hunting rifles weren’t necessarily short barreled. Your choices are a bit broader than most generally think. BJH

To shoot or not to shoot? Unethical?

If I could get that close it would be venison. For me it’s all about getting close. All the deer I’ve ever harvested were inside archery range. Part of this is necessary due to my eyesight. BJH

    This years Sauerkraut project

It’s easy to do, just finely sliced cabbage and salt plus pressure to work up the brine. Seal from air contact and ferment for six weeks to about two months.

    Your welcome!

How thick does a loading block need to be?

Mine are all made from pallet scraps, poplar and oak. About 5/8 to 1/2 inch thick. I drill my holes with speed bore wood drill bits. Say for a .50 caliber gun I start out with a 9/16 bit and carefully file it down to about .520 to start with. Test drill some holes, and test with your ball and...

    Home made wads

Working in a food service ware house has its advantages, card board slip sheets, all thickness and types. Corrugated and solid stock up to 1/8 inch thick. All I need to do is ask permission before I throw one in the truck. It just winds up in the recycling compactor otherwise. Besides making...

    This years Sauerkraut project

This stuff has taken on a life of its own. With the help of a bunch of special needs folks and their supporters, we put up three buckets, about 85 lbs of kraut. This project will feed a bunch of folks at different events this coming year. Now I need to find time to make our own supply. BJH

    Gunbuilder's bench plans

Mine was originally built to have a functioning gunstockers bench that was semi portable, by disassembling it. I have had it at Dixon’s gunmakers fair when I used to have a table there. Plus at some local show and tells. I found it to be so handy I no longer use My traditional work bench for...

    Left-handed Jaeger feasible?

The lef hand Siler is a Germanic lock, so it certainly is reasonable for a Jeager. It is a 1770 s style lock so the rest of the gun should reflect a bit later Jeager style. Jeagers varied greatly due to the region of the Germanic states they were built in. And time period. So the Siler is not a...

Need more patching eduction - please

It sounds to me the sight issue is making more of a problem than the patch and lube combo is. I think you will benefit more from a thicker front sight and a wider notch in the rear. Just my long term experience with muzzloaders and open sights. Your shorter rifle idea will make iron sights more...

    Gunbuilder's bench plans

That would be my design, the plans are available from me. You must be a bit stronger than me. I get pretty ferocious shaping stocks down to rough size and find it fine for my use. I also use a tie down strap over the forend support and forend when I’m getting froggy. BJH PS PM me for more info.

MORE DIFFICULT BUILD PISTOL OR RIFLE

Long guns and pistols both have there own challenges. I personally don’t find one more difficult than the other to build. However a pistol will concentrate all your goofs into a small easily examined object. So workmanship is at a premium, building a pistol. It’s got to be right or goofs really...

    Wood grain through the wrist?

If the blank is quarter sawn then the grain definitely should follow the wrist of the stock. If flat or board sawn then it is not as critical. If you look at the but end of the blank with it oriented vertically. The annular rings should be some variation of a arc across the wide part of the...

POLL on Smoothbore Deer Hunting Distances

All the deer I have ever harvested were within archery range. With my eye sight to be certain to shoot a deer that meets our state antler restrictions it must be less than 50 yards away. Even though I regularly hit deer heart sized targets on our clubs woods walk. Farther than 50 yds. As a...
