    Traditional gun stock finish

Linseed and most nut & seed oils react with oxygen to polymerize into a varnish. Gum spirits will lower the viscosity of oils so they will absorb into the wood surface.

For anyone considering an Indian manufactured Flintlock

Beware of Middlesex, since, although there's a wealth of info on his website he just is incapable of properly fixing lock defects, and his turnaround time is SLOW. He doesn't commnicate well, and a soft sear that bent, he returned as "fixed", but it was obvious he did nothing to it. I finally...

Any other heretics out there that oil their barrels?

I've been burning black powder for over 1/2 century now & never had issue with oil in the bore building fouling. After every cleaning I remove any moisture with a couple of patches with WD40, then swab with Birchwood Casey Barricade (used to be called sheath). Never had any rust issues.

    Pietta revolver parts on ebay

Overpricing goods by ignorant sellers for ignorant buyers is prevalent in many collector disciplines. I collect vintage Gillette razors , which were made by the hubndreds of thousands in the 1920s & 30's. I buy the worn & dirty ones cheap and refurb/replate to their former glory - they're...

    Cleaning

Several years ago I bought a "Brand New & Never Fired" stainless ROA. It didn't take much inspection to determine that it was neither New, nor Unfired, and the already cheap price was further adjusted accordingly. Stainless or not, the never-before-removed nipples were solidly corroded into...

    Ditch The Patch Knife

After over 50 years of shooting muzzleloaders, I've long ago given up all pretense of historical correctness. Until I take the rifle from the scabbard after parking my mule at the range, I need no scratchy undies, hot woolen coats, not patch knives - precut and pre dry-lubed work just fine.

How would you remove this blemish?

You'll be able to easier make it look worse than look better, no matter which talented fool you decide to use for advice.

Thinking about getting my first cap and ball revolver.

Everyone seems to go ga-ga over the 1851 Navy. Sure they were popular back in the day, but they don't hit to POA. When I was a kid, Dad brought home an 1861 navy - better blade front sight, and one of the most beautiful revolvers Colt ever built. Over 50 years later, I still have it & it's a...

    Anyone else shoot Flintlock?

While in High School and College, I'd shoot at a range adjacent to Delasware State Park. There was an elderly gent there who always brought out ana armload of flint rifles. They were all works of art & I thought he was a rifle builder testing a batch of new rifles before sending them to...

Best Caliber for Targets, 100 Yards & Less

My Dad built a .40 cal cap rifle in 1970. It is a tack driver, but is also very fussy to load and maintain accuracy over multiple shots. My first rifles, both flint & cap, were .50 cal. Easier to maintain accuracy then the .40 cal, but a chore to work up accurate loads. My first .54 cal was a...

I Hope To Meet With Lead Casting Folks

Pure lead from Roto Metals is what I use a lot of. If you make friends with a tire shop, get the stick-on wheelweights, since there are many in use made of soft lead o pure lead. Beware of the off zinc alloy or iron weights, but they're easy to spot. Be sure to remove ascmuch of the sticky...

I Hope To Meet With Lead Casting Folks

Even 50 years ago, when Dad brought home a Replica Arms (Uberti made) 1861 Colt Navy, it was known to use only pure lead for muzzleloaders.

WANTED Is anyone here selling a few decent English flints for a Traditions Hawken?

I just order mine from ToTW and specify that I want only flat flints and no humped ones. Never had any problems.
