Went to a small show here at a Moose Lodge. Nothing but ammo and modern,s. Brought my ASP .36 Navy to see if I could generate a sale to one of the vendors. Absolutely no interest in it except they thought it was cool. And the ammo prices were really no bargain.

CVA Hawkin in classifeids now at $250.00 HURRY

Oh yea, play nice people, too busy to read all the above but looks interesting. May come back LOL (no I wont I hate the pickering). Stay well

I do concede to the fact that a derringer is not great first choice for anyone entering the muzzle Loading Hobby. But it is a cheap project kit. As Pathfinder stated "put some lipstick on that pig"For what it,s worth I will dress it up and make it look Purdy. Take some waxed lunch bags and sealing wax and gonna make some mini cannistear shot slugs for it. Im retired so I enjoy many aspect,s of the Hobby. Im at the point in life where im past D*** measuring on certain issues. If you do not like a particular item....here,s some advice. Dont buy it. Do what makes you happy. I do not need the rest of the World,s approval. SM

Depending on your patience, kits show up on here occasionally in the classifieds. A good used one as mentioned already would be my advice. I also own 2 derringers and although they can be fun I would have left muzzloading if they had been my first ML'r. Either that or after realizing that was not a great decision I would go out and have to spend more money to get something more satisfactory. A derringer is not accurate except at extremely close range.

A Deringer is the original Belly Gun. It's not even for "close range" it's for contact range

The newest iterations of them are no better.....I have new "Derringers" that can barely hit paper at 5 yards.

The originals were designed to pop a guy in the gut circa 1850 and then he goes off to die 9 days later.

If you can find one, a Lyman Plains pistol kit is probably 200-250ish and probably the best bang for your buck. I have one and it's awesome.

As few as 10 years ago it was common to see botched CVA stuff at almost every garage sale (even in CA). Gun shops usually had a poorly pieced or incomplete BP long rifle or two on the rack for cheap. You rarely see either today. Right now in CA having anything resembling a firearm at a garage sale may earn you a visit from the local SWAT team thanks to mentally defective neighbors.

there are hundreds of CVA pistols (both colonial and kentucky) out there where the kit builder never even sanded the ridges off the stock properly. I have picked them up for $75 to $150. Re working and customizing such kits can result in a much better gun than factory finished. I no longer have one I was proud of. A CVA kentucky in 45 cal. I cut the stock back, added a barrel lug and underrib, but first turned the 2/3 of the barrel toward the muzzle gradually round with a slight wedding band at the transition. I added a sturdy ram rod and larger thimble. Switched the locks to one with a fly and added a single set trigger. Most folks could no longer tell that it was a CVA by birth. Looked more like a fancy custom gun, except for the lock.

I'd either go with the complete .44 Brasser or make the stretch and get that Plains Pistol kit

I've seen guys on here do beautiful work with those Plains Pistols, you would almost not even know it's a Lyman after they were done

Plus they have the secret single-set trigger

none of the descriptions mention a set trigger on the plains? if they did i would be tempted to get one..

Pedersoli has a nice philly derringer for $550.00 unless you want the one in the fancy box for 800....
