Hickory Trees, Nuts, get it?
Got the first time. Just find the nuts don’t have straight grain nor are they long enough. FYI, more hickory trees around the house than I can count. Good stuff, however, I keep about a facecord of pecan wood stacked and dried for barbecuing and smoking. Never tried pecan for ramrods, but never had a straight of long enough piece to try

My local hardware store has some very straight stiff dowel rods that would be great for a ramrod. Much stiffer than the rods that came with my 3 rifles. Might check your local hardware store.
Stiff or not doesn’t matter, it comes down to how straight the grain is. Most dowel rods are cut without regard to grain. Doesn’t mean that some cut dowels don’t have straight grain.

Some tool handles, like baseball bats, are made from ash - not hickory.b but
You are likely correct about baseball bats. Individual I know involved with manufacturing of wooden baseball bats says that hickory is not the preferred wood to use because It’s weight and impact on bat speed. Don’t see bat or ramrod speed bring a concern with how I use ramrods. For ramrods, hickory still seems to be a preferred material.
