I have looked at a few pics of patch boxes most are from Vincent rifles. Here is a combined pic of more than one. I will try to send 2 pics and not waste space. I'm asking for opinion.

I am not all that familiar with the Vincent rifles so I am not much help. But I would recommend searching through the various gun auction houses for pictures of originals they have sold. save the pictures to use as a reference.

I used the one from Track.

The pokie thing on the top of the butplate was trimmed. It was plank build. I used track plans. I search the internet for pictures and put them in a file when planning these projects.

Y'know, I have a few rifles with patch boxes in them. Never really found much use for them except maybe to put some silver or gold coins inside for a rainy day. Would've preferred a compass.

I don't know from where you hail but the Log Cabin Shop in Lodi OH has a number of fine original Vincents they will likely let you examine and photograph. The Campus Martius Museum in Marietta OH has many original Vincents to look at.

I store a jag, worm, and ball puller in my patch boxes, but I have never stored patches. I truly suspect many of the original uses was some the same.

I tried to store patches there once, but found it very awkward to get one when I wanted it. I guess if it were large enough for a ball, patch, primer and powder charge it might have some use as a grab and go gun, but I keep all that stuff in my possibles bag, which will get grabbed along with the gun and the horn if I want a muzzleloader quick... though absent a backslide in technology, I can't imagine why I would need to do that.

Agree, but a properly done patch box can improve the looks, if nothing else.

My thought: If your skill level is high go for the temptation. If you have average skill level, I suggest the pineapple. Open wood in an inlet is not for the average skill. A lower skill craftsman can install a open wood patch box, but classy quality looks will not be there. JMO

Larry I like the pineapple but it wS mainly for ha
Wins I thought. I've done the fancy patch boxes with push button release in the toe plate and I done one in the buttplate on top of comb close to back. I feel like I'm still up to it just tedious. LOL

I did an Armstrong rifle as my first complicated ML build. The pierced patchbox was the one thing that did not go well. You can not inlet straight down. You have to work your way around the curve. Nice to know now. : )

I use my patchboxes. Each rifle I make get a little tool kit that goes in the patchbox. That way I do not have to look for accessories before I shoot. I shoot several calibers. Hunting for things is frustrating.
