What are your excuses please.

I am screwed , My daughter is the only employee at our small post office. When I buy a money order for a large sum ,she says buying another gun? When it comes in she calls her mom and tells her dad's gun is coming today. Fortunately at my age I don't have the urge to buy that I had when I was younger.

1. You need one for bad weather
2. Your muzzleloader is very old and with inflation it would be much more expensive if you bought another one in the future.
3. This is the very last one I will ever buy. Really! I promise!
4. It's really difficult to see the sights clearly on the one I have and I sure would hate to accidently shoot someone.
5. Hey honey, why don't you start shooting with me? You can use the one I have and I'll just pick up some other old one somewhere. I would love us doing this together.
6. A guy at the range has an uncle that passed away and his widow is getting rid of all his stuff. He had this old muzzleloader and she is selling it and doesn't even know what it's worth. In a regular gun store it would cost 3 times as much a she is asking.
7. You know I could make a lot of money at some of these shoots if I just had another gun that would shoot straighter that the one I have. Hell, it would probably pay for itself.
8. That old ML that I have been using, for God knows how long, it really acting finicky. The last thing I need is for it to blow up in my face. I can't imagine how much all those hospital bills would be.
9. You know honey, there is no way I want to invest money in the stock market and lose it all. I was thinking it might be worth while to invest in something more tangible, I don't know maybe fine art, gold or maybe even firearms? There are some really good deals out there, especially on old muzzleloaders. Maybe I'll check that out. I'm only thinking of our financial future.

11. Look what I picked up. It was a fantastic deal. Feel how smooth that stock is. It's almost a work of art. I mean, I can always take it back...
12. I really, really, REALLY need another gun. I don't know why but I think it's important in case that old one I have breaks. Some guys, most of the guys I know keep buying guns and don't even tell or ask their wives. But I don't want to be like the other guys and lie because we have always been open and honest with each other and I don't want to go behind your back. I've only wanted the best for you and I have been so lucky that you have only wanted the best for me. Well I don't need to have the best honey, because I have you and you are everything I ever wanted. But I found this gun, and while it's not the best which would make it very expensive, it still a really nice gun and at a fair price well below what Davy Crockett's or Danial Boone's guns are worth. Beside, I think you would like it as much as I do as you always appreciate nice things like that washing machine you always wanted.

I think I've used all those plus some lol great post a lot of thought.

Can you all give me excuses I can tell my wife why I need to buy a another muzzleloader. I have completely ran out of them. I am desperate. lol

I don't use excuses...,

I sneak it into the house. I don't necessarily take "delivery" at my front door, you see.

Then I store it for a while. When I start shooting it I do my best over time for her not to get a good look at it, and finally when she does notice, and asks, "Is that a new gun?" I can truthfully say, "Nah, that was bought a while back."

It's been working for a while now. Even as I write this a vintage CVA shotgun kit has been sitting in plain view in the living room for about a month. I will likely unbox it and start working on it in January.

The trick is to have enough that an additional one doesn't really stick out....

On a more serious note, my addic.....um passion is becoming building muzzleloaders. I've built two, both of them flintlock, both of them 20 ga. See...here's the thing: I can't find what I want to shoot over the counter. "Aw heck, I'll just build one. How hard can it be?" says I to myself. And then I think "I can do better on the next one..." Or, "I'd really like to learn to engrave..." And so it goes. Yeah...I have the third one (mostly) planned out in my head. And yup...another 20 ga. French trade gun.

She is going to find out it was cheaper to buy the gun than all the proper tools to make one

I'm not sure that's universally correct, when you find out how much craftsmen like our Dave Person, Alex Efremenko, Rich Pierce, or others like Clay Smith, & Mike Brooks charge. (Of course they deserve every penny.) If you build your own, think of the bragging rights! That alone is beyond price.

As far as the price of tools goes, so far I've only invested in two that aren't common, run-of-the-mill hand tools; a drill press, and a belt sander. That's it. The rest, rasps, files, hacksaw & blades, sand paper, etc. I had on hand anyway.

So no, I don't quite buy that argument.

Years ago I didn't tell my wife when I bought another gun. She was real upset that I kept it a secret. Now I just say I am going to buy a gun just as soon as she oks the finances. Sometimes it is right away and then it could be 3 - 4 months but she never says no. Our system seems to work ok. I just ordered 2 Colerain barrels a few weeks ago. Also keeping my mouth shut when she buys those dumb things women buy (jewelry kitchen appliances clothing food etc) is wise and shows wisdom.

I don’t tell my wife anything when I buy a gun, communication can ruin a marriage. I squirrel away cash to pay for them and either pick them up or have them sent to my office. My office acts as a halfway house until I smuggle them home and get them tucked into the safe. There are 5 rifles and a handgun at my office now. After that it’s just a matter of not having too many out at once.
