What sort of strap or cord was used to suspend a large Civil War style powder flask? I'm not reenacting the Civil War, I'd just like to have something period correct for my flask -- I prefer a flask to a horn. Let's not go down the exploding flask road. I use a measure to pour powder down the barrel.

You will know this, but if carried open end up, suspend the flask under your coat so no sparks can fall in the top and spoil your day.
Many British sportsmen carried the flask in a pocket for this reason. That is why there are so many old flasks with no suspension rings fitted.

All the best,
Richard.

With all due respect, Richard - per the OP's post:

I years ago contrived a sling type leather holder that caried the charger downwards more thinking of rain & detris getting into the nozzle hanging under the right arm pit . I charged from any such flask all my useing flasks being double shutter flash proof fitted with Green Cord it being the colour of the patron Saint of Gunners , St Barbera Not that Ime that religious but do like to keep traditions Yes maybe others will decrie that plan but after nye 60 years Ime still whole .
