When I still had a .40 I shot with a friend fairly often. First thing he mentioned was the sharp "crack" when it fired. They are also capable of amazing velocities. 60 grains of Goex in my rifle (38" barrel) chronographed at 2145 fps. That would be my deer load for sure. But my favorite load was 40 grains of 3F for around 1700 fps and amazing accuracy.

Mine loves 40 grains of fffg…and a .390 PRB

mine loves 55gr. anything under that is accurate, but not as accurate. i will go up to 60 and see what it does. but at 55gr. it shoots better than i can. the 3 shots were sighting it in. i had it a couple of years and never filed the sight enough, i just held a little high. so, a year ago or so i got the file out and fine-tuned it. the one-hole group is off the bench at 50yds, and i really think it was 5 shots not 4,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Hello Hanshi. Hope weather great up in Maine Dosing in the uk sun today Guess . A ,4”‘lead ball is 203g but some charts say 90 g. That’s a good 1000 ft lbs of energy my .36 is. 900 ft lbs. ,( it’s a 1/4 of my 450-400 nitro at 4100 ft lbs)

Thing is if a .45 is great for deer , but how do you fancy going up an angry bear with a .400 you got to build a .4 ml double love to come to Maine with my .36 double bug oh the customs paperwork

Yeah. .40 only just became legal for deer in Virginia. I’ve always used a .45 before. Well, or a .75.

Hello been experimenting how to make a .5 oval bore “Lancaster rifle”. I wanted to measure how much oval I had . I hammered a .6” ball down into the muzzle , no big deal but it left a washer of lead surprisingly it took little effort to push the ball right through.

It’s a slow process making an oval my way , no machine you see, So of course grinding paste and measuring the lead plug I got .400 of oval , it’s a slow process weeks of work .

However it made nice round balls to oval bullets. I cannot fire them as no police licence how it would work with a rifled bore I am not sure Fir the moment not got that far but think it would be great , except for the tapping noise in the woods. Ha hz

Reading this conversation Then it occurred to me you could equally do the same with the .4” bore and a .45 lead ball. Thus you would not need to patch the ball And a wad between ball and powder

Just a thought from a 79 year old fart as a earlier reader put it. Hot and sunny west of London. Wife droning on again she wants to talk, a conversation even , like flowers , not guns boats and cars and motorhomes or fishing , She knew I was a gunny man , when we met, rows later “ I thought I could change you “. I can live without my wife but not without guns. 53 years of marriage.
