I got my no. 11 caps from Midway USA last week. Went to try them on my Harper's Ferry pistol today. About two thirds failed to fire on first strike, though they did on the second. Guess I'll have to wait for Remingtons to get reliable ignition. Better than nothing, though.

Nipple is to fat or got a crown on it. Take the nipple out and insert into a drill, turn on drill and gently sand/file the diameter of the nipple.

Reason first hammer hit pushes the cap down onto the nipple to contact the compound, second hit makes it go bang. Reducing the diameter of the nipple will allow the cap to be pushed down so the compound contacts the nipple and bang first time. Very common problem with an simple fix.

If they are firing on the second hammer fall it's probably because they are not seated all the way on your nipple. The first hammer strike seats them. It's a matter of cap to nipple fit. Sometimes all you have to do is press them on harder to seat them. Sometimes, using a wood dowel to push them down more is all you need to do. Modifying your nipples or getting different nipples can solve the issue, as well. It's not the caps, it's how they are fitting on your nipple. Lots of the European nipples don't match up well with all the caps out there.

As stated the nipple is probably flattened or oversized for your caps, Just chuck the nipple into a drill and use a fine tool stone to "sharpen"the nipple.I have done this many many times. Once on a trail shoot I used a sandstone rock to sharpen the nipple on fellow shooters rifle. They thanked me by beating me!

Had a similar issue with Remington caps. Out of 50 only 10 fired. Use CCI exclusively. Never had a misfire. The only issue I have with CCI is that they split and fall off of the nipple. Had one jam my action once. This is less an issue than a misfire, though as I sometimes carry my C&B for self-defense. (And NO! I've never felt under armed or at a disadvantage carrying C&B as opposed to cartridge pistols.)

Going thru same with newly prchased caps BUT second hit does nothing

Havent done hammer test yet to see if the caps are hust bad.

What lot number are your caps?

Wow. With your exp at mis fires you dont feel at a disadvantage? No such thing as second place in a gunfight: Its called first loser. And when hunting game its called unintentional vegetarian Attacked by predator when hunting? Use your new found hammer that used to be called a pistol

Sorry but when it comes to misfires, its a huge deal for me

I had a bad problem with that on a lyman great plains I had went threw several new nipples before I ordered a hot shot one from tow that was better tapered then no issues

You want to test a cap. Never mind the gun. Put the cap on the top of the bench vise anvil. Hit with the ball peen hammer.

It goes off you are in no danger unless you are one of the newbie types that think a cap has the power of a pound of C4
