Mexicans don’t really celebrate it. If one knows the history they’d understand why, the entire reason for the French Invasion was because of the corruption of Mexican Government and its failure to pay loans back to the British and French for the Texas War and Mexican American War. While the conflict ended with the French abandoning Mexico, Mexico would then be invaded and occupied by the United States on various occasions through the end of WW1 and the Wilson Doctrine. Mexico had a difficult time staying on the side of stability and even know with the migrant crisis their internal struggles with corruption are ongoing.

Hey I have a thought, perhaps we could celebrate open the boarders joe, opps that has allready been done. Or lets declare war on Mexico and make it part of the United States then there would be no need for all the illegals to migrate. We could send all the shall we say problem makers down there and they can have there own country. Happy Cinco de Myao fellas crack a corona and watch the show coming to a neighorhood near you.

I don't know about 'celebrate', but commemorate, maybe? San Jacinto Day?

Here in UK, the Armed Forces actually celebrate 'Battle of Britain' with a celebratory dinner. Same for Waterloo and Trafalgar Day. Civilians don't do it, though. Many of our infantry regiments also have celebratory dinners/days - mostly for battles during the Peninsula Wars - Talavera Day and so on. Parades are paraded, with battle honours honoured and a great pi$$-up is had by one and all in the respective messes.
San Jacinto kind of comes close, I guess, but yet it was differant. A vast territory changed hands, treaties were signed, a president was captured, etc. This battle meant something. The battle that is celebrated by Cinco de Mayo was just that, a battle, but what really changed?

Cinco de Mayo celebrations are pushed by the beverage distribution industry to sell booze. That’s all it is
You are absolutely correct, sir! It's wasn't even celebrated in Mexico. Budweiser came up with the idea & every drunken fool in the U.S. bought into it. Of course, most don't need an excuse to act like a drunken fool, but it helps explain things to the wife.

I never did understand cultural appropriation.
I like driving my Cherokee. I respect the people of the same name, and mean no disrespect to them, but it seems that's not enough. I would be proud if a car was introduced that was called the Shillelagh, or the Tipperary, or the Celtic - I wouldn't be offended.
So I guess I can only portray people from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Poland, because that's my heritage?
Things have gotten so screwed up...
Is it appropriation if a Mexican asks me to have a drink with him on Cinco de Mayo?

Yes, France helped win the American Revolution.
But it didn’t turn out well for France. Ultimately Louis would ruin his constitution over the price of supporting America
( old sea song haul away Joe
King Looly was the king of France
Before the revolut-e-tion
Away haul away haul away Joe
Then he got his head cut off and spoiled his
Constitution-tu-tion)
They would win the Hundred years war
Multi wars with Spain and the Italian states
The couldn’t defeat the Brits, but gave Europe a run for its money
Americans like to say if it wasn’t for us they would be speaking German, but if it wasn’t for the UK Europe would be speaking French

it was a victory for the french on the American side. I was not referring to greater global conflict.

The Gary Cooper movie "Vera Cruz"or Clint Eastwood's "2 Mules for Sister Sarah" could have been alot better movies had they had technicians that knew a little history or bothered looking it up. Both movies were entertaining but each could have been much more Historically Correct.
To enjoy fiction requires the willing suspension of disbelief. Some fiction requires more of that than others.
